Comedy on TV

Post by TrueCrazyLion on Fri Nov 03, 2017 8:52 pm

Couldn't see a thread anywhere about this, so thought I'd make this one since it's close to my heart.

What's everyone into? I've been watching loads of Big Bang Theory lately, but it varies.

For comedy I'm watching Gogglebox and Have You Been Paying Attention. Both are very popular Aussie shows and are hilarious.

Mock the Week is the program I never miss... even though my favourites are not there anymore, like Frankie Boyle and Russell Howard.

The other program I watch on repeat is Friends.

Sad to see Robert Guillaume (Benson) pass away this week. RIP

Gogglebox is really good. I was speaking about this with my girlfriend recently, a few times we've watched Gogglebox together and we've always ended up commenting on it just like the featured people do on the shows they're watching - so we were basically Goggleboxing Gogglebox. LOL.

Mock The Week and 8 Out Of 10 Cats are shows I really enjoy, genuinely witty and very funny.

I've watched a number of classic shows recently on Yesterday channel too - Blackadder, Porridge, Fawlty Towers and my favourite from that era, Some Mothers Do Ave Em, which seems to get funnier everytime I see an episode of it.

(Edited a couple of times to correct typos)

Some great English classics there! The English have always done comedy so well.

My favourite show in the entire world is Red Dwarf... I like a lot of different comedy shows, I agree that English comedy is pretty great Smile

OMG Faulty Tower is definitely another one! Mr Faulty kills me!

Also Only fools and horses and Father Ted.

Ohhhhh.... Father Ted was excellent! I especially loved the housekeeper.

Father Ted is brilliant. My favourite character is Father Jack - the constant shouting and swearing and being pissed, and the carry-on with his pet brick at one point. Genius.
Mrs Doyle is great in it too.

Now watching a bunch of Family Guy on ITV2 - different episodes from very different years, the show has definitely developed over time, both in terms of how the characters are drawn and in terms of the dialogue. Still more or less equally funny though.

Agree Family Guy is great and in a similar vein I do enjoy Bobs Burgers.

Are there any Scottish comedies I would know?

Sure. A personal favourite of mine is Chewin' The Fat:

Also there's Still Game, which started as a Chewin' The Fat spin-off but has been running for much longer now:

And a classic Scottish sitcom is Rab C Nesbitt:

There are probably more too, but these are the ones I know off the top of my head.

Not heard of those, shame though, they look like a good laugh.

They're pretty in-your-face, LOL. Scottish humour is generally not subtle! Very Happy

Just been watching a new one called Ghosted on ITV2 - pretty good, has a feel of Scrubs about it.

Friends is my favourite show to watch when hungover in, like, the whole world. Cannot go wrong with it!

Also you mentioned The Nanny in the other thread; I love that too. I came across it about 10 years ago when LivingTV were showing repeats of it in the small hours.
The jokes and storylines are cheesy, but hey, Fran Drescher is in it! Very Happy

LOL I am guilty of watching programs or movies just because the main character is hot.... hahaha

Did you know Fran Drescher is in her 60s? I couldn't believe it when I read that a while back.

Wow... Right enough, she just turned 60 recently. She looks stunning, she really doesn’t age! I love her accent too.

Yeah, I think I’ve always watched comedies partially for that reason - Monica in Friends, Roz in Frasier... Definitely Penny in Big Bang Theory! I also used to watch Sex & The City religiously, where my loyalties were always split between Carrie’s looks and Samantha’s personality. LOL.
