THE national carrier of Algeria says it has lost contact with one of its aircraft nearly an hour after it took off from Burkina Faso bound for Algiers.
“Air navigation services have lost contact with an Air Algerie plane today flying from Ouagadougou to Algiers, 50 minutes after takeoff at 01.55 GMT,” the airline said today, cited by national news agency APS.
“In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan,” the agency quoted the airline as saying.
The plane is an Airbus A320 Carrying 110 passengers, and six crew members according to Reuters.
The flight path of Flight AH5017 from Ouagadougou, the capital of the west African nation of Burkina Faso, to Algiers was not immediately clear.
Ougadougou is in a nearly straight line south of Algiers, passing over Mali where unrest continues in the north.

Just a bit more..
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/24543099/contact-lost-with-algerian-jet-over-africa/"The source said contact with the flight was lost while it was still in Malian airspace approaching the border with Algeria. "The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route," the source said. "Contact was lost after the change of course." The airline announced that the plane had gone missing in a brief statement carried by national news agency APS. "Air navigation services have lost contact with an Air Algerie plane Thursday flying from Ouagadougou to Algiers, 50 minutes after takeoff," the statement said. It added that the company initiated an "emergency plan" in the search for flight AH5017, which flies the four-hour passenger route four times a week."

Re: Air Algerie Plane Lost Contact
Four months ago MH370 vanished and we still have no clues as to what happened.
Last month 13 planes vanished from radars over Europe.
A few days ago a plane was shot down over Ukraine (still wondering about why).
Now another plane has disappeared over North Africa.
I don't remember ever reading about so many aviation disasters and mysteries in such short period of time.

http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/air-algerie-plane-missing-after-air-traffic-controllers-lost-contact/story-fnizu68q-1227000625288AN Air Algerie flight that went missing en route from Burkina Faso to Algiers with 119 people on board has crashed, officials say.
“I can confirm that it has crashed,” an Algerian official told Reuters, declining to give details of where the plane was or what caused the accident.
Burkina Faso’s transport minister said 50 French nationals were among those on-board, along with 24 Burkina Faso nationals, six Lebanese, five Canadians, four Algerians, two Luxembourg nationals, one Swiss, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian and one Malian.

Re: Air Algerie Plane Lost Contact
Apparently this last one was downed by a storm. That's a bit strange because planes are generally protected from storms unless they were very low and hit a wind shear.

Does seem a little strange. Must have been some freak storm, or they were flying low as you say. One early report I saw said it was a fire onboard, but nothing more about that now.

Yep.........not much left.
But still air travel is the safest way, and you are more likely to die in a car crash, struck by lightning, choking, slipping in the bath, etc....
My problem is that the second MH plane was shot down with a missile......that changes the game.

Witnesses said there were “no seats, no luggage, no trace of human beings,” describing the plane as “pulverized.”
This will be absolutely awful recovering the bodies. Very sad for the families.
