Tukdam Empty Tukdam

Tukdam (Wyl. thugs dam) is an honorific term for meditative practice and experience that is frequently used to refer to the period following the death of a great master, during which time they are absorbed in luminosity. As Sogyal Rinpoche describes it in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying[1]:

A realized practitioner continues to abide by the recognition of the nature of mind at the moment of death, and awakens into the Ground Luminosity when it manifests. He or she may even remain in that state for a number of days. Some practitioners and masters die sitting upright in that state for a number of days. Some practitioners and masters die sitting upright in meditation posture, and others in the “posture of the sleeping lion.” Besides their perfect poise, there will be other signs that show they are resting in the state of the Ground Luminosity: There is still a certain color and glow in their face, the nose does not sink inward, the skin remains soft and flexible, the body does not become stiff, the eyes are said to keep a soft and compassionate glow, and there is still a warmth at the heart. Great care is taken that the master’s body is not touched, and silence is maintained until he or she has arisen from this state of meditation.

A mummified monk found in the lotus position in Mongolia is 'not dead' and is instead one stage away from becoming a real-life Buddha, it has been claimed.

Forensic examinations are under way on the amazing remains, which are believed to be around 200 years old, having been preserved in animal skin. But one expert has insisted the human relic is actually in 'very deep meditation' and in a rare and very special spiritual state known as 'tukdam'.

Over the last 50 years there are said to have been 40 such cases in India involving meditating Tibetan monks.

They really believe he is not dead??

Ganhugiyn Purevbata, a professor at the Mongolian Institute of Buddhist Art at Ulaanbaatar Buddhist University told The Siberian Times that the mummy “is sitting in the lotus position vajra, the left hand is opened, and the right hand symbolizes of the preaching Sutra.”
“This is a sign that the Lama is not dead,” he continued, “but is in a very deep meditation according to the ancient tradition of Buddhist lamas.”
Purevbata is suggesting that the monk is in a tukdam state, a form of meditation that can continue into death if the posture is maintained.

He self mummified himself..... I don't really see the point of that but I am not a Buddhist... I respect whatever they believe but I don't understand it.

Nor do you understand how they can steam wet sheets off their backs in freezing temps.

Met a ex Buddhist Monk at the gym a few weeks ago. I somehow knew he was a Monk. I asked him if it's possible to levitate, he explained it is true, but many go mad in the process and it can only be done at curtain locations. It's is very advanced.

Debunk this?

Can't work off videos all the time VM, they are too easily doctored.

Better idea is for you to explain how it works in simple physics terms.

I have no idea. all I know is I asked a Monk about levitation and he said it is true, it can be done, so maybe it's for real. This guy was not a fake as we had a long talk and he did some chanting for me and explained the middle path.

The video is just something I found on utube.

It may be that a monk levitating is working on thinking about altering his field of energy as it relates to the planets' thus repelling his body from the earth some what.

Or it could be an illusion like Derryn Brown does.

except if it's being done as part of a meditation technique, normally there wouldn't be an audience, so not really any point in cheapening a practice they live by.

Growing up in a Catholic environment as a child I learned the stories of levitating nuns and monks: Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Francis D'Assisi, St. Joseph of Copertino and the most recent one Padre Pio. The church is very careful now with new claims but they say anything is possible when God wants it.

Science has shown with quantum physics that objects can defy gravity and levitate = be suspended in the air. A couple of years ago people would have dismissed that idea as crazy..... maybe in the future we will learn the secret of human levitation too?

Here's the article explaining the levitation in the video : LINK
