Reading their bible, their own Lord and Saviour was healing the sick, making blind men see for free.

He fed the hungry, and made water to wine for a family at no cost to them.

all these charitable things that Christ did in their Bible inspired them to try and spread that to those who would not normally accept the religious teachings, but use these examples to try and better society was their goal. They saw the greed and selfishness growing back then in the 1800's, people taking advantage of others rather than working in a more community minded spirit, and they found that wrong. The basic tenets behind socialism was to better all humankind via helping your neighbor also live a meaningful, dignified and fulfilled life.

To the 1st paragraph:
They fear it all as it is anathema to the indoctrinated Capitalism as they are taught by the Corporatists (Corporate-Fascists).

to 2nd paragraph: Well, as happened some one took control of it all and made it more fascist (the Church power in middle ages to the Renaissance era), now all the neo Christians in America also practice more a fascist version of Christianity where4 the way they behave, he would not recognize what the were doing or about. Most do not even wish to be near a poor person, many have swallowed the Neo-Con demonization of the Poor as deserving of their situations, which they also do not understand that the majority of poor do work and find jobs, but the jobs they can get will not lift them out of poverty as the usual mantra of modern society claims it will. So few give to help the poor. many can;t stand to know that people in their churches even have diseases that make then poor due to disability(which they support the republicans in cutting the programs that help them scrape by.
