Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
Can't argue with that, Greed is a bloody virus!
Carbs are the fuel that powers our bodies the problem we have is we eat too much refined carbs, far more than we need. Humans have an inclination toward sweet things as a supply of energy when times were lean. But we have raised it to an art form. The psychology of added sugar/salt is to get people addicted and increase sales.

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
I use pills and dietary intake to control the diabetes, so once the weight drops, I may have more leeway. but yeah, some nice wild plants, mushrooms, (identification is key), and wild caught fish or game for a nice soup/stew is preferable when possible
Unfortunately I can no longer hunt/fish. I t is nigh impossible to till my own land if i have it, or get down to care for the veggies and fruits, or pick me own fruit. I must go for the super-market, or if possible a farmers' market where I can make stuff with my own selected from their stock ingredients, but there are days when the legs do NOT allow me to make the better meals, so a stock of quick foods is also in my freezer for such days, canned goods as well.
But the meat issue, I eat meat for 2 of my 3 meals, no cancer it seems, might be my one lucky break to be resistant to cancer? Hard to tell for sure, but that colonoscopy showed clear, so less likely my guts are to grow cancer.

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
I went to the hospital library yesterday during my break to read about this latest research and one piece of data caught my attention:
"The consumption of processed meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer to 45 people in 1000.
If you do not eat processed meat the risk lowers to 36.5 people in 1000"
LOL! Really? That's not even a significant drop!
I can understand with smoking as smokers are 1500 to 3000% more likely to develop cancer..... but colorectal and processed meats? I don't see the big fuss about it.
Rock, you mentioned all the salt in bacon and processed foods, I know salt can cause cardiovascular problems but I don't think it can cause cancer..... can it?
Star, yes, we only live once and we should live it to the full..... not in a dangerous way, but we have to live while we are alive!!
Len, have you been trying to loose weight?
Rogue: that's the correct philosophy, everything in moderation!

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
This is not something we didn''t already know, if you eat processed meats like burgers, sausages and bacon often then obviously it's not good for you. They are also fatty and high in salt, we know it's not good for us already. But everything in moderation! I am not a big fan of bacon, burgers or sausages so don't often eat them, but I do enjoy a nice bit of ham. Not really going to stop eating that, but I don't eat it on a daily basis anyway, but even if I did wouldn't change.
My father went from being an alcoholic, and somebody that ate whatever he wanted and rich foods too, to a vegan. Why was that? He listened far too much to the media and it scared him from eating anything! That's all fine if you want to be vegan, but he got ridiculous and there wasn't much he would eat. He couldn't go out for a meal anywhere. This was years ago before places stared really catering for vegans. I have a couple of vegan friends and they just don't look healthy to me!

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
In the end I think my mom got it right, you are bound to die from something, no matter what you do or eat. My take is keep healthy and do what ever you have to, but enjoy it, and weigh the consequences.
The scientist don,t always get it right, especially if they are owned by the giant corporations.
Ags I am a bit suspicious at this study, that sounds like the margin of error. What are we to understand with this result, eat more meat? LoL
Timmy, so now we have bloody viruses? what next. Hahaha.

Well, no, actually the opposite, the WHO study was just to inform people that processed meat can be carcinogenic. But everything can be carcinogenic! From the washing powder we use, to deodorants, to the polluted air we breath!!!
Stirks, I agree with you: we eat vegetarian/vegan about 3 times a day in this house, but only because we do not want the unnecessary killing of animals. I have met vegan patients at the hospital who always end up on intravenous vitamins/minerals as they lack sooo much when they are admitted!!

Processed foods have a lot of preservatives Ags, to make them last longer. Shop bacon is laced with them and they are the bad chemicals not salt in that respect.
There are two ubiquitous wild plants that are easy to identify Len. Dandelion and wild Chicory and both are edible.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/#c1 will help with id'ing mushrooms. So will https://www.erowid.org The latter has photos and id's of most wild plants, some are hallucinogenic but.

Been doing it slowly. steady loss will be the loss that sticks. Rapid loss always means for me rapid over-gain.
Vegans always become too sick from their overzealous cutting off all animal protein which we have been evolved to process.
I am bookmarking the ID links! Thanks rock!
I know Morels grow around my area every may, food mushrooms of the wild is what I have to look for.

Morels are okay as long as you cook them Len, poisonous if eaten raw. Some mushies will give you a good feed and you can take a trip and never leave the forest!
We have Blue Bonnets here, they go by many different names and are all over the world. When you cook them they turn blue. The reason for Dr. Seus' "Green eggs and ham".

Yes, and the flavor is supposed to be very good for morels. The W.H.O. now says no need t totally cut out processed meats, but to eat them in moderation, and folks will be safe.

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
I think the WHO is looking t get people to cut back, we do need to not overindulge across the world in processed meats, sugar, sodium, but so many items already do go over our daily limits in but one can, one serving, one box, one meal. Example, Swanson "Hungry man" dinners usually tend to close in on the daily 3grams a day of salt in one dinner alone!
I ceased consuming those years ago when I became more salt ingestion conscious due to salt level headaches.
Sugar plus fibre is my most recent one.
I tend to eat more non-processed meat than processed, (Though some items I would still devour if they were safer.)
It is the least expensive foods that have the most badness in them for our health.

Re: Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Red Meat Could Too,
Len, I was into the wine business in Jamaica. I made exotic wines made from fruits the real organic way. All my trees were controlled the natural way, I used no chemicals or pesticides. When I got permit from the government of Jamaica, it gave me the go ahead to export my wine. When I applied for the permit to Europe, and America, they both differed in the interpretation of organic, you know what append to my product.

They would not accept it into the regions?

You got it. Just filling out the forms shows you how much good food is rejected for good looking food.
