Antibiotic Apocalypse
Bacteria containing mcr-1 gene resistant to all known antibiotics
DECEMBER 7, 20159:26AM
A strain of the common e. coli bacteria resistant to all known treatments has been found in Denmark.
JUST weeks after the discovery in China of bacteria resistant to all known forms of treatment, the same strain has been found in Denmark. Worse: It’s been there since 2012.
Late last week researchers at the Technical University of Denmark announced they had found the feared ‘invulnerability’ gene among E. coli bacteria samples taken from humans and food.
The scientists had been conducting a review of a genetic database of some 3000 different E. coli samples taken since 2009.
Specifically they were seeking the mcr-1 gene, a mutation which gives bacteria a frightening resistance to the last effective family of antibiotics — colistin.
ANTIBIOTIC APOCALYPSE: A new dark age of medicine looms
According to a press statement accompanying the publication of their study in the science journal Lancet, the search revealed a patient suffering from a blood infection earlier this year had the super-resistant bacteria.
Five more examples of bacteria containing the mcr-1 gene were found among samples taken from food imported between 2012 and 2014.
Danish researchers fear the untreatable superbug is now firmly embedded in Europe. The man suffering the blood infection had not travelled outside the country and the infected imports were German poultry products.
The Chinese outbreak of mcr-1 containing bacteria was found among pigs and people early last month.
What makes mcr-1 such a threat, other than its immunity to all known antibiotics, is that it can spread fast. It has been found to reside in plasmids, mobile ‘packets’ of DNA which can be copied and transferred between different bacteria.

Well that's just fabulous... not!
My work is looking to put antibiotic monitoring into place here within the next couple of years. Looks to me like they might be too late to prevent overuse.

I do think some sort of monitoring would probably be good. I know people that seem to be given antibiotics for all sorts of ailments. I have a mate who was given them for the flu a couple of months ago. From what I understand that is pretty pointless.

I read that it's not just the abuse of antibiotics that's making some bacteria 'invincible' but also the fact that people and industries are flushing medication down the toilet and sinks, which eventually end up in rivers etc and bacteria is mutating due to this.

We're going to be in a mighty lot of trouble if we lose antibiotics...

That and the people who do not use all their anti-biotics for the right illness, they feel better, so they stock away what is left for a "rainy day" not realizing that they are only almost out of the woods, and are helping make their bugs stronger. I.E. if you are given 30pills of Anti-biotics, you use all 30 pills! you do not save the last 10 if you think you are okay, you keep going till they are done so as to make your body a death zone for the bad bugs, then to replace the good ones in your guts, go eat yogurt after that 30th pill is done in your body!

I can remember when the first antibiotics came on stream here. They were being prescribed for a heartache or even a headache (useless for both). Saved a lot of children from Diphtheria though.
Both Len and Ags are right, that is a way of producing superbugs!

So again, Big Agro is why the bacteria in the wild are getting stronger, not just from Hospitals and human abuse at home.

Yeah Len. Lacing animals with antibiotics is a road to disaster.
Heard the end of a news broadcast here that a strain of bug has been discovered that is resistant to Every antibiotic we have! Now that is scary!

Truth is, what goes around comes around, we are moving so fast no time to comprehensively test things on a time basis.
On the other hand changes will bring about new changes, that well cultivate new remedies.

the thing is, right now we have a very strong anti-biotic to be used when the others are not strong enough, but it also can be too strong for some. anti-biotics once used properly, then require that you eat yogurt with active cultures to replace the gut bugs you lost while taking the anti-biotics to kill what infections you had, as the anti-biotics kill all they can, friendly or not in you. you intestinal flora/fauna are amongst the casualties from such treatments, so yogurt time after the last of the anti-biotics is out of you.
