Re: Antimicrobial Resistance Deadlier Than Cancer...
This scares me more than the prospect of WWIII: without antibiotics we would go back to the world 100 years ago, where women used to die after childbirth, a cut on your hand could kill you... and all because we wouldn't be able to fight simple infections.
The last class of antibiotic was discovered in the '80s..... yep, more than 3 decades ago. And resistance to the only antibiotics we have have been increasing from a few cases in 2003 to 300 in 2010... and the numbers keep on growing.
How is this going to end?

Indeed they are Len. Do you all realise that there has been no new antibiotics developed since the 1980's?
Modern Big Pharma is not interested in cures, they want ongoing conditions that need controlling. No money in cures!

I disagree. The big pharma conspiracy doesn't work in countries with social healthcare (like the UK).

I also disagree with the idea of a Big Pharma conspiracy.

Great minds think alike Ags!
Not a conspiracy, it's just good business. Why make a cure when they can supply a controlling drug for years.
If you look into the TPPA and the TAPA that is being negotiated you will see what I mean. The drug companies want to extend their patents out to 50 years or more to block generics from being used in all the countries that have a NHS or similar.

What about this, Tim:
Glaxo is one of the big pharmaceutical companies.
http://www.sciencealert.com/pharmaceutical-giant-gets-rid-of-all-its-patents-in-poor-countriesHealth experts have welcomed an announcement by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline that it will stop seeking patent protections in developing and low-income nations, which will allow cheaper generic versions of name-brand drugs to be sold to the public.
Glaxo is one of the big pharmaceutical companies.

58 countries in the world have free healthcare. True that the money comes from taxes but millions don't work and have never worked one day in their lives, and yet they get free treatments.
Also, why would scientists hide cures when they also get ill (or they families)? The big pharma conspiracy doesn't make sense.

Re: Antimicrobial Resistance Deadlier Than Cancer...
The last antibiotic developed was Cypro in 1987. It came from the lab of Uni of Pennsylvania. Interferon used to treat AIDS and other viral conditions came from the Uni of Socal. Viagra was developed as a rapid blood pressure lowering drug and someone found that it had another effect. It was developed by the London School of Medicine.
All of them were developed with taxpayer money and sold very cheaply to the drug companies. Since then the various Govts. have slowly strangled the Uni's of funding and so there is not much research and development going on there. Not one of the big Pharma companies have developed a new drug for the last 40 or so years. They are in the marketing business that's all.
The mad Albanian Martin Shkreli voiced what the companies are doing - price gouging and keeping quiet about it.
