Yeah, we here like to think it was just our bombs that made them surrender and avoid the deaths of 1million soldiers, and 10million Japanese.....they convened because they wished to avoid the fate of Germany to wit full Soviet Invasion.

Re: Was Nuking Japan necessary?...
I don't know guys, if at this point it makes any difference to pose this question. History will repeat itself if we believe in karma. I personally do not think the bombing of these two Japanese cities had anything to do with the surrender of Japan, but more to test the effects of the bomb, and the deterrent effect it would have on other nations. Remember they were contemplating a third bomb stronger than any of the two they dropped. This would not have changed anything in terms of surrendering, but psychologically would affect future deterrent of any nation willing to go against the US superiority.
Lets face it, everyone knew Japan was loosing the war, so it was not the outcome that was important, it was the strategical, and political positioning going into the future with these weapons of mass destruction.
If we are talking about historical value of do's and dont's, they would do the same thing if they had weapons such as an antimatter bomb. If they feel it would work as a deterrent, they would not care about surrender.
I question the reason for this article, and the reason they are asking this question at this time.

It is always a thing to look back on History to ask if such a thing were the right thing. I also suspect that with the way the world tensions are, that they may be seeking to see if the use of Nuclear weapons would be viable, which it should not ever be. and Remember, the US has thus far bee the ONLY nation to use such weapons in anger.

Ah yes, the brilliant wisdom of hindsight!
Was the bombing necessary? Well no but it was done to show the world that the USA has the biggie.
Hiroshima was a crude Uranium bomb and Nagasaki was the 1st gen. hydrogen bomb. It was dropped to see the effect such a weapon had on a population. The Japanese were used as guinea pigs. It troubled Truman's conscience for years after he left office.
Tim.
