Equator Storms Empty Equator Storms

THE MAP LOOKS terrifyingly unfamiliar. Not because of the outlines of the continents; those are comforting in their hooks, tails, splotches, and whorls. It’s the storms. Across the globe’s tropics right now, seven superstorms are swirling over oceans. Hurricane Florence is butting into the Carolinas on North America’s southeastern coast. Tropical storms Helene, Isaac, and Joyce are hovering over the Atlantic like jets stacked on approach to Charlotte. Tropical cyclone Barijat is breaking up as it makes landfall at the Gulf of Tonkin while the Philippines and the rest of southeast Asia girds itself for Super Typhoon Mangkhut.

That's unreal! Pretty soon there will be no habitable spaces and we'll be reduced to wandering tribes.

the Florence pooped out at landfall, so she became a mere tropical storm at the end. Will the storms be more raging over oceans and then peter out at land fall w/o the thermals to drive them?

Still climate change is impacting them either way.

Mangkhut might be more like what we should expect.

The water Flo is dumping looks pretty incredible! Turning into an inland sea.

Hurricanes are described by wind speed Len. Cat. 1 = 110mph, Cat 5 = 180+mph.

The wind drops off as the storm moves over land and becomes a water dump! The wind dropped off with Flo shortly after landfall.

Yep Rog, Mangkhut is the new normal.

Yeah, as I understand it, water thermals power up the winds that hurricanes use. They also affect our weather for hundreds of miles. Once they hit land, they lose the thermal drives and dump what they have accumulated.

What happens when floodwater from Florence recede? You have to clean fish off the highway. (Courtesy Penderlea Fire Department

Ew... ugh, I would have no idea how to deal with the things they're having to deal with now. Commercial farm detritus and now fishy roads...

There's a cyclone forming in the South Pacific which is very very early. First time one has formed this early in the season since 1950.
