25% of the male population won't make it to age 65
Percentage of Population Surviving from Age 21 to Age 65
1990 - Male (72.3%) Female (83.6%)
http://www.ssa.gov/history/lifeexpect.html
So, over 25% of the male population won't make it to age 65........
I wonder if that number is climbing with our 'modern lifestyles'?

I spose I've not thought this one through in the past, but if i'd been asked, I would have thought a lot more than 25% wouldn't make it to 65.

New data (2009) shows 11.7% of the male population will not survive past the age of 65....so things have gotten better for the stronger sex (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr62/nvsr62_07.pdf)

Myths About Life Expectancy And Social Security
Statistically, Americans are more likely to reach the age of full retirement. In 1990, the SSA projected that someone who was 21 had a 72% of reaching full retirement-age. The Social Security Administration reports that figure had risen to slightly less than 79% by 2009.

Here, this is easier to find and read, the other document was way too long. The 11.7% was about white males only in the US as they seem to live longer than males of other ethnicities.
These statistics are different and they have all countries and all males under gender and not ethnicity, which I guess changes the percentage:
In Israel 14.9% of males won't reach 65.
In Canada 14.9%.
in the UK 18.5%
In Italy 18.6%....etc.
But if you talk about the US 22.6% won't reach the age of 65.
And in some African countries the statistics are very depressing!

Talked to a young Muslim girl from the middle east once while getting a blood test, she was the tech. She said you are very lucky to be 60 years old as many males in the middle east die in their 40's.

I know, and in many countries in Africa they also die incredibly young...... we are lucky, cause we live in developed countries but lucky to a point: living a life with no quality like many elderly with dementia is also very sad.

I chalk it up to several things. Poor diets, ingestion of recreational substances and then doing stupid stunts that remove them from the gene pool. GM crops rotting our guts.
Smoking and drinking too much.
X treme sports accidents.
pollution in environments
dangerous to the health jobs.
soldiering in a war zone.

lol - In Europe three to four glasses of wine daily is normal.
Then again, on my mothers side (she had a different father and lived to 91) most of the 13 kids died from cancer in their late 50's/ early 60's.

Yeah they DO drink 4 - 5 glasses of wine in some European countries (notably the Med countries) but they drink it with meals generally. Germany and Central Europe drink beer.
Men die young in Russia too, it's common to see few men around who are over 45 or so there.
Stressful lives have something to do with it too.
Tim.

In Italy everybody drink a glass of wine (or two) with meals and men also drink beer and spiritis but the difference is that they don't do it till they pass out or they are really drunk. Same with food, and Italian woul never say no to a dessert....but they eat it all in moderation and they are pretty healthy.
But then I met Italians that live in the US and they are all overweight..... so I'm not sure if it's the lifestyle or the quality of the food.
