Meteorite Hits Nicaragua... -508388

Residents in Nicaragua were awoken by a thudding boom hours after warnings that the 2014 RC 'pitbull' asteroid was due to skirt close to the earth.

Scientists this morning now believe a small meteorite from the asteroid actually hit the wooded area near the capital Managua, leaving a crater.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said a committee formed by the government to study the event determined it was a "relatively small" meteorite that "appears to have come off an asteroid that was passing close to Earth."

Nicaraguan Institute of Earth Studies scientist Jose Millan added: "We need to celebrate the fact that it fell in an area where, thank God, it didn't cause any danger to the population".

The crater near the city's airport has a radius of 12 meters (39 feet) and a depth of 5 meters (16 feet) but it is not yet clear if the meteorite disintegrated or was buried.

From Here.

Isn't it funny (or strange) that everytime a small meteorite hits the Earth always hits a deserted area? Never a big city?

Not really Ags, when you look at the Earth as a whole only a small percentage is actually built up areas.

God just took me ages to find the actual figure lol!!

GRUMP data indicate that roughly 3% of the Earth's land surface is occupied by urban areas, an increase of at least 50% over previous estimates that urban areas occupied 1-2% of the Earth's total land area.

Plus that is only 3% of the land mass, not 3% of the whole planet. Land mass is 29% of earth as the rest is water. So although we think our planet is over run with humans and our infrastructure, when we look at the big picture we (all 7 billion of us) only take up a small bit of the planet.

Just found some interesting info: If you took all the people in the world, you could fit them all in the grand canyon with lots of room to spare! In fact you could fit 2000 - 3000 times of the world's population into the grand canyon's volume.
