Modified Mosquitos... Empty Modified Mosquitos...

Post by Rockhopper Fri Jun 13, 2014 8:12 pm

Scientists have developed a way of GM mosquitos so that they produce 95% male offspring. The idea is to reduce the number of females 'coz they are the ones that bite and spread disease.

B.B.C. Article
Scientists have created mosquitoes that produce 95% male offspring, with the aim of helping control malaria.
Flooding cages of normal mosquitoes with the new strain caused a shortage of females and a population crash.
The system works by shredding the X chromosome during sperm production, leaving very few X-carrying sperm to produce female embryos.
In the wild it could slash numbers of malaria-spreading mosquitoes, reports the journal Nature Communications.
Although probably several years away from field trials, other researchers say this marks an important step forward in the effort to produce a genetic control strategy.
Malaria is transmitted exclusively by mosquitoes. Despite reductions brought about by measures such as nets or spraying homes with insecticides, it continues to kill hundreds of thousands of people annually, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.

This is the side of science that worries me, as they don't know if this genetic manipulation will create dangerous side effects.....I need to read more about it, I'll do it later.

There was another method they were trialling on an island off Vietnam last year sometime. They had infected the mosquitos with a virus that was found in the guts of fruit flies (harmless to humans), that "crowded out" the malaria. Haven't heard the final results, but at the time, it looked promising.

Just saw this in our News today..

Mosquito-borne virus warning for NW AAP June 16, 2014, 1:13 pm Share Facebook Twitter G+ Pinterest Mail Mosquito-borne virus warning for north WA Mosquito-borne virus warning for north WA Murray Valley encephalitis and Kunjin virus have been detected in Western Australia's Kimberley and Pilbara regions for the first time this year. No human cases of infection have been reported in 2014 so far, but the viruses have been picked up in sentinel chicken flocks, which are used as an early warning system. Department of Health entomologist Peter Neville says residents and travellers in the Pilbara and Kimberley should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, which is how the viruses are carried. While the risk of being infected and becoming unwell is low, the illnesses can be severe and even fatal. Initial symptoms of Murray Valley encephalitis include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness. In severe cases, people may experience fits and lapse into a coma, and may be left with permanent brain damage or die. "In young children, fever might be the only early sign, so parents should see their doctor if concerned, particularly if their child experiences drowsiness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding, or general distress," Dr Neville said. Kunjin virus usually causes milder symptoms, but in rare cases may lead to delirium and coma. wrote:
