Solar Power Revolution...
A good look at the solar industry in Germany.
And how a silicon cell works.

Germany's energy revolution on verge of collapse
Germany's energy revolution has gone sour, as have its efforts to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's "Energiewende" policy aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent between 1990 and 2020, mostly by closing coal-fired power plants and boosting renewable energy. Yet in 2013, coal burning soared to its highest level for more than 20 years.

Re: Solar Power Revolution...
Yep, Germany gets most of it's power from coal currently. They are working toward getting out of the fossil fuel industry.

Re: Solar Power Revolution...
Hmmm, there may be an agenda afoot at New Scientist as their owners are very business oriented, Fossil Fuels more likely
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_Business_Information
"Since 2009 Reed Business Information has focused on paid content, data services and online marketing."
Of course Germany is pointed at wind power as well. Renewables so that solar and wind, plus tidal as Germany has access to ope waters.

Yes Len. I am aware that 'New Scientist' is on the fringe of Science and business.
Some of the criticism of Germany's 'Clean Power' is coming indirectly from the fossil fuel industry in Europe which has an axe to grind.

Apparently you do.▓ wrote: Any fool knows this.
Solar on it's own would not work but in conjunction with all the other renewables, it can. Wind, Wave, Tidal, Geo-thermal, biofuels all can play a part. It takes a change of mind-set. But with so many with a mind-set like yours, it is going to be a long process.
It is ridiculous to use food stock to make bio-fuels when there are so many other things it can be made from that can not be used for food. For example; sawdust and shavings.
http://www.dw.de/denmark-leads-the-charge-in-renewable-energy/a-17603695Denmark has lofty goals: By 2020, the country aims to produce 70 percent of its energy from renewable sources and to make the switch to renewables completely by mid-century.
"Today, we're already at 43 percent," said Kristoffer Böttzauw, the deputy director general of the Danish energy agency Energistyrelsen, which coordinates Denmark's energy policy.
"At present, renewable energy sources account for about 25 percent of Denmark's total energy consumption," said Böttzauw. He's convinced that the country's goal to completely abandon coal, oil and gas by 2050 is realistic.

You should read the site where those images came from and understand what they are really saying. Does environmental sustainability ring a bell?

With a mindset like yours we will have considerable difficulty convincing people that we need to change our ways or die it's that simple. You may want to self-destruct but I don't, I still have many people like you to annoy!

LOL! I do find it interesting that the oldest of us gets it, then LGR doesn't, then the rest of us "Young ones" get it as well, changes need to be made. Mindsets, ideas, industries as well so that the renewables do in fact replace much the fossil fuels, I figured the smarter FF companies would smell the coffee brewing and get in on that and work on their own alternate energy branches and make it so that they will be ready for the shift from dependence on coal/oil/gas to the renewables. Sadly, I must report I was mistaken, they are still trying to get the maximum from dead dino juice and block the renewables and that is why we are in the mess we find ourselves. They even fund the anti-intellectualisnm that has gripped America. Yes the Big Oil types are funding the growth of stupidity.

Is it deliberate? A rhetorical question, we already know the answer.Lenzabi wrote:They even fund the anti-intellectualisnm that has gripped America. Yes the Big Oil types are funding the growth of stupidity.
I am disturbed by the level of dumbness that is spreading throughout the western world. Even some Brits are succumbing to it! Cameron would dearly love to have religion taught in public schools again but knows that if he did so there would be an outcry! He had a paid Nanny to look after him as a child until he was old enough to shipped off to a Boarding School. His parents didn't want a family to interfere with their social and business lives. So he's completely out of touch with the reality that surrounds him.
Even out own John Key is out of touch. He claims a rags-to-riches rise but his family were hardly raggedy! His mother was an Austrian Jew refugee that came out here just before WW II. His Daddy was a wealthy business owner much older than his mother. When Johnny was 11 his father died and his mummy sold up everything including several properties in Auckland and moved the Christchurch where she got a Widow's Benefit and a State house (Social housing). Johnny went to an average primary school but when he reach time to go to Middle School mummy put him into one of the most expensive Private Schools (Christ College) at the cost of $4000.00 a term. Not at all bad for some-one on a widow's pension! No, mummy was never poor neither was Johnny. Studied Economics at Uni and became a Currency Trader (read a Robber Baron) and a multi-millionaire! He's now our PM and often goes to Hawaii to play golf with Bams. Or enjoy a life of desperate poverty in his little 12 bedroom, five bathroom cottage in Honolulu.
But I digress, Here's a link to how solar power can be put to good use!

Show me how renewables will make up 85,000,000 barrels of oil per day. I'm not even including coal fired power plants. No way can renewables power our world.
Childhood fantasies.......

All Hail Oh Great and Wonderous, Superior one! All seeing, all knowing visitor from the planet Fantasia!!
Alright satire over, no-one has said that we need to replace 85 million barrels of dino juice. We need to change our lifestyles by not continuing to shit in our own nests until the nest becomes intolerable to live in. Worse we are shitting in the nests of others who are not producing the shit that is building up (Kiribati for example), why should we destroy their nests? What gives us that right?
If you want to drown in your own crap, that's fine, just keep it inside your own borders. If you can't do that then stop doing it to others and stop being so bloody selfish.
LGR you should really ask Chuck and Dave for a raise, you're a great shill for them.

Oh, so now we don't need 85 million barrels of dino juice. You are correct, DEMAND IS GROWING.

World Sets New Oil Production and Consumption Records
Global oil production advanced in 2013 by 557,000 barrels per day (bpd), reaching a new all-time high of 86.8 million bpd (an increase of 0.6 percent over 2012). After declining in 2009, global crude oil production has now increased 4 years in a row.

Must be some petty long legs you got there LGR, if you can kick him from America when he is in New Zealand, LOL!
Problem, we are running low on the anthracite coal which burned clean and hot compared to the majority of the coal we use and ship to other nations which burns dirty and nasty.
Koch brother sell petcoke laced 3rd grade coal which barely burns, the petcoke is nasty stuff. Look it up.

Why do I feel like I'm being stalked here? No problem, I can handle it!
The prob is that the Nuke Power stations are getting old. The owners want to extend the licence for another 50yrs Len. So far they are not getting that but. So coal is taking over for now.
Petcoke is nasty stuff alright essentially rock with tar all through it. When it "burns" it dumps heavy metals and particulates into the air.
