Antarctica's Retreating Ice...
Things are getting serious down south.

CAPE LEGOUPIL, Antarctica (AP) — From the ground in this extreme northern part of Antarctica, spectacularly white and blinding ice seems to extend forever. What can't be seen is the battle raging thousands of feet (hundreds of meters) below to re-shape Earth.
Water is eating away at the Antarctic ice, melting it where it hits the oceans. As the ice sheets slowly thaw, water pours into the sea — 130 billion tons of ice (118 billion metric tons) per year for the past decade, according to NASA satellite calculations. That's the weight of more than 356,000 Empire State Buildings, enough ice melt to fill more than 1.3 million Olympic swimming pools. And the melting is accelerating.
In the worst case scenario, Antarctica's melt could push sea levels up 10 feet (3 meters) worldwide in a century or two, recurving heavily populated coastlines.
Parts of Antarctica are melting so rapidly it has become "ground zero of global climate change without a doubt," said Harvard geophysicist Jerry Mitrovica.

Re: Antarctica's Retreating Ice...
Cities at coasts will need to be abandoned as people retreat inland to other places thus growing those cities and urban areas, or they will see some of their cities and living areas reduced and the maps will change, or they will have cities setting up like the watery city of Venice Italy, reworking the electrical systems and running via docks/bridges and walks as well as boats to get around.
Of course the methane released also means hermetically sealed dwellings and masks to go out doors. Humanity dithers and farts about putting off measures to fix things for the next generations to deal with, not realizing that THIS is the time to start the fixing, not tomorrow, not the ones coming out of college in the next four years, NOW is the time to act, yet sadly, as it is not seen as imminent and immediate danger, they worry not.

What a crook of shit.

Sea ice surrounding Antarctica reached a new record high extent this year, covering more of the southern oceans than it has since scientists began a long-term satellite record to map sea ice extent in the late 1970s.

Re: Antarctica's Retreating Ice...
Older video, arctic is bald of ice now.
Glacial ice shed is what will increase the water levels

Re: Antarctica's Retreating Ice...
Watch that video more closely, 1:15 on he starts to discuss the way deniers try and use the growth of the sea ice around antarctica , but that it is a mistake, further, the cause may be what was found in the article YOU provided. "Melting ice on the edges of the Antarctic continent could be leading to more fresh, just-above-freezing water, which makes refreezing into sea ice easier, Parkinson said. Or changes in water circulation patterns, bringing colder waters up to the surface around the landmass, could help grow more ice."
Yes, more ice, but it is the glacial melting that is likely what caused fresh water to get tot he ocean waters and due to it being less salty, makes for the ice we are seeing in the NASA article.
Or
"“Its really not surprising to people in the climate field that not every location on the face of Earth is acting as expected – it would be amazing if everything did,” Parkinson said. “The Antarctic sea ice is one of those areas where things have not gone entirely as expected. So it’s natural for scientists to ask, ‘OK, this isn’t what we expected, now how can we explain it?’”"
In other words LGR as science gets new data,, they have to recalibrate, re-adjust and see what the causes are for the phenomena. And that this is just the one region whilst the North Pole loses ice is a different story as well.
Another note from the article "“The planet as a whole is doing what was expected in terms of warming. Sea ice as a whole is decreasing as expected, but just like with global warming, not every location with sea ice will have a downward trend in ice extent,” Parkinson said."
I see this as they are getting expected results over all, and that Antarctica is having some interesting changes, I myself think the fresh water additions of glacial melts and snow make a lot of sense as to why we see this expanded sea ices, but it is a false indicator for the deniers who seek all ways possible to say "all is well, nothing to see here"

Re: Antarctica's Retreating Ice...
Yeah Len. What people don't want to know is that because of the temp increasing down there the ice is moving faster to the coast. That gives the impression that the ice is increasing but it isn't, it just seems like it. It is in fact melting faster!
