So it seems fresh leaks are a happening at the damaged reactor yet again!

The Tokyo Electric Power Corp. says Unit 1 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant did, in fact, meltdown during the 2011 accident. TEPCO released results from a three-day study in February of the Unit 1 reactor building jointly with the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning. The two companies collected data until March 10. The project used cosmic rays to inspect the interior of the building. By analyzing the flow of muons, which are subatomic particles generated when cosmic rays collide with the atmosphere, TEPCO was able to generate X-ray like images of the interior of the reactor. Muons can pass through concrete and iron, but they are blocked and change direction when they hit high-density substances such as plutonium and uranium, creating a "shadow." TEPCO said the fuel had melted because there were no shadows around the reactor's core, and the fuel had likely melted and fallen to the bottom of the building into a containment vessel. The operator also said there was no accumulation of water in the core of the reactor pressure vessel. TEPCO said the results confirmed previous assumptions of a meltdown. The utility plans to continue measurement until it gains enough data to conduct a statistical analysis, and said the data gained will help it work out a plan to remove the debris, most likely by robots due to the high amounts of radiation in the reactor.

And also leaks ate Torness in the UK,

An investigation is under way following a radioactive leak at the Torness nuclear power station. Health and safety officials were alerted after the problem was found during a routine inspection.The incident was one of three reported to ministers from UK plants which are now under investigation by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). Groundwater at the Dunbar plant was found to be contaminated with radioactive tritium, which was leaking from two pipelines. All three incidents occurred in February and are still under investigation by ONR - the government's nuclear safety watchdog. They were serious enough to be reported to ministers under safety guidelines agreed after the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine 25 years ago. According to the ONR, the response to the incidents from the companies that run the plants was "appropriate". The pipelines at Torness were put out of use after the leak was discovered.

So both cases could be bad for the groundwater is what folks get to use as drinking water, yet the Nuclear Industry still touts itself as a safe and "green" alternative for our power generation, which means big money plants that are not well inspected enough to stop things, but catch the damage after the horses left the barn.

Hence my pic, it seems that they had it right using Homer as a Nuke plant guy as the industry seems about as inept as Homer. Many plants are having leak issues as we speak, and America has a LOT of the crumbly things.

More crumbly and so irradiated that clean up will be a major issue!

Not the least bit worried about a clean-up Len. That's a problem the next generation will have to deal with. They're only interested in making money in the here and now.

Update as of May 2

A tiny amount of radioactive water has leaked from a storage tank at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant, said May 1 that about 40 milliliters of water was found under a storage tank holding radiation-contaminated water. The water is believed to have leaked from the tank. Sandbags were placed around the tank to prevent water from spreading to other areas. A TEPCO official said a worker came across the wet patch measuring 20 centimeters square at 9:30 a.m. on May 1. Seventy millisieverts per hour of beta ray-emitting radioactivity were detected on the surface where the water had leaked.

So, another leaky tank, these were not supposed to be such long standing solutions, just until they could figure out a way to deal with it, and that was supposed to happen a couple of years ago.
