Our National Health system is a Govt. guaranteed insurance scheme. Anyone who needs health care gets it regardless of their circumstances when they need it. Ambulances cost though, usually about $50.00.

Pensions will be around for a while here (as long as it sees me out) and after that who cares!

Tim.

A ambulance ride cost my brother $1,000.

Need a root canal and crown, $2,000 for one tooth.

Pensions are pretty much gone. Even Police and Fire are losing ground.

Very few people here can work for one company 30+ years and get an old age pension.

Kids are convinced the only way to success is a college degree, many owe $100,000 and end up working for Starbucks Coffee.

Employers have dropped insurance and now people are forced into purchasing Obamacare out of their own pockets. many States have no subsidies.

The USA is turning into a third world country. The new norm is $12 hour with no benefits.

If I was 20's early 30's now, I'd be looking at emigrating.

Vm......where would you emigrate to?

And regarding pensions: I have known for at least a decade that I will have to work until I'm 70......in Europe is just like in the US regarding pensions, that's because more people are living longer.

Nonsense, that's the line you are being told. Used to know someone who worked for the City, retired at age 49 (30 years service) with 70% of his prior income.

That's the story you are being told, we are living longer (BS) nothing more than slavery. Look in you little bible............

Quit being so THICK headed!

Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

Yep VM. The Bible also says "Three score years and ten" (70 years). So that made 'Middle Age' at 35 years.

When the pension was set at 60 it was because people (men usually) rarely lived longer than about 65 years due to the vagarities of the work they did during their life. Today we have machinery to do most of the grunt work for us. So people's bodies are not wearing out to the same extent. We also have "better" health care and in general, more available and "better" food.

The end result is people are living longer and healthier lives.

Our pension system is paid from taxes we pay over our working lives not at the whim of a boss so there is no fiddling of pension funds.

Tim.

The Longevity Myth

On paper, the upswing in American longevity since 1900 is hard to ignore: About 49 for both genders then versus about 78 for both genders today, an apparent gain of nearly three full decades. But this striking then-and-now statistical juxtaposition has been framed in the public dialogue as if mass numbers of Will Rogers' contemporaries suddenly keeled over on their 49th birthdays. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Rarely has a data set been more misleading or a statistical "fact" more specious. The credulous reporting of those "facts" is not only journalistically irresponsible, but bespeaks a woeful misunderstanding of the entire concept of life expectancy.

Most laypeople (and not a few media types) unthinkingly assume life expectancy to be a fixed number that indicates the age at which adults can expect to die. "Well, I'm 65, and life expectancy is 78, so I have 13 years left." Not so. Life expectancy--as the term is used by scientists, demographers, actuaries and allied professionals--is a sliding scale. Somewhat like a GPS navigational system that recalculates your route if you miss a turn, life-expectancy tables refigure your odds of dying at each new age plateau that you attain. That calculation is made based on the average number of additional years of life logged by others who have reached the same plateau. In actuarial circles, this is known as "life expectancy by age." Among other things, it's the primary basis for life-insurance underwriting.

U.S. death rates remained remarkably level over the 60-year period between 1948 and 2007: 9.9-per-1000 in the earliest year, 8.0 in the final one. (The rate dropped below 9.0 for the first time in 1975 and has declined only incrementally since.)

The bottom line is this: Adjusting for some of the plaguelike factors that wiped out mass numbers of Americans in the bad old days, the longevity enhancements of the current era are shockingly modest. Simply put, if in years gone by you survived the bigger killer diseases, you were likely to live almost as long as your heirs today. This counterintuitive multigenerational parity is visible throughout American history. As far back as the Civil War era, a 70year-old man could expect to live to about 80. In 1950, that same 70-year-old man could expect to live to about ... 80. No measurable gain in a full century of progress.

Grandfathers, born in the 1800's

One worked in the mines and smoked 7 packs of camel straights a day, lived to 78.

The other, had 13 kids during the 1930's with no job, drank like a fish his whole life, lived to 84.

Remember, woman live longer than men, well most woman now have to work (added stress) and Now are not living longer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Life expectancy for men now higher than for women in 100 areas

Traditionally, women live longer than men. But a combination of more women taking on the stress of full-time work, often at the same time as looking after children or parents, as well as adopting more unhealthy lifestyles has seen the gap close.

Women are also being diagnosed with traditional “male” diseases, such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

The latest findings, from Public Health England for 2006 to 2010, show that the second biggest gap in longevity between men and women is in the wealthy area of Ladbroke Grove East in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London.

There, men tend to live to 93 and women only to 87.5 – a difference of 5.5 years.

Yes, work and stress..........and the fact that now women smoke and drink too much!

Those areas where men are outliving women, are all rich areas with people with lots of money and those men can afford to eat better and are more aware of the dangers of smoking and drinking in excess.

In the UK, according to your article, women still outlive men, with a life expectancy of 82.9 V men at 78.9.

LOL some people never retire, VM, especially when they do a job they love........and unfortunately (or fortunately)  those genes run in my family, my dad and uncles are all still working part time!! Not because they need the money, but because they want to carry on working.......it's like it gives them a purpose....and they all love what they do.

I plan for life thinking that I am going to live till I'm in my 80s but you never know what the future holds, I may not get there but you can't think about the end........the end will come when it comes, so I am not entertaining those thoughts.

I will try to enjoy my retirement..........but please tell me: what is a retirement you can enjoy??
