Wisconsin town of La Crosse under attack from Mayflies

Biblical swarm of mayflies attacks town

IF you’re a squeamish person you may not want to read on.

Pictures have emerged from the city of La Crosse in Wisconsin, US showing an explosion of tiny flies.

What appears to be a storm-cloud taking over the city on Sunday is actually a swarm of thousands of mayflies taking flight.

The bunch was so large it was seen on weather radar (look below).

The bugs blanketed everything from gas stations to roads.

Police say the large hatch may have triggered a three-vehicle crash on a Wisconsin road.

Two people were injured in the crash with one person taken to a local hospital.

Mayfly nymphs spend a year or two in the water (in this case, the Mississippi River) feeding on organic decay. Then, when summer arrives, they fly off and mate before immediately heading back to the water to lay eggs and die, The Atlantic Citylab reports.

They only live for 48 hours, but mayflies are just as much a problem dead as they are alive, experts say.
“They’re sometimes accumulating in areas that are lit up at night; so street signs, any of the power poles that have power lights on them, those are objects that these animals will be attracted to,” Harvey Halvorsen of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resouces told WEAU. “Especially the bridges, if bridges have lighting, the Hexagenia adults will be attracted to the bridges.”

Locals said this year’s emergence was larger than the last one experienced by the city in 2012.

I don't think I'd want a longer life if I was a bug...

I suppose it could be possible that they define time in a different way to other creatures though.

Putting yourself in anothers place is the first rule of empathy  Razz

*climbs off soapbox*

On another note, normally these things coincide with other events...such as young bats and fledglings learning to hunt. However the bat numbers haven't recovered from that "White Nose" fungal infection...if they ever will. Haven't heard about anything restricting the population of other insectivores in that area, but who knows

Good point Mordae. Its a fine balancing act. Go too far one way and something else gives.
