Which foods are really good for you?
Apparently most 'superfoods' we eat are not really that super!
Really good are Barley, oats, garlic for hypertension and olive oil.
Good are almonds, oily fish, prunes, probiotics and pulses...... and that is it.
Have a look at the interactive chart here: http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations/snake-oil-superfoods/

Do you regularly 'detox' with a green tea or a wheatgrass juice and pack your diet full of chia seeds and acai berry all in the hope of improving your cholesterol, combating cancer and promoting weight loss?
Are you among the millions who believe oysters are an aphrodisiac, boosting your sex drive?
Every day across the world scientists publish countless studies into the health benefits of various foods, prompting new food fads, and encouraging millions to invest in 'the' latest superfood.
Frustrated by the constant stream of conflicting scientific evidence, one data journalist and information designer from London was inspired to 'wade through the murk' to offer people a little light in the confusion.
David McCandless, author of the book Information Is Beautiful, began collating thousands of scientific studies to produce a stunning interactive Snake Oil Superfoods infographic to inform people and ensure 'they aren't duped'.
The 43-year-old embarked on the challenge with Dr Miriam Quick, investigating the evidence to establish which studies 'really stand up to the test of science', promising 'solid scientific evidence for extra health benefits of certain foods'.
The finished, though ever-evolving, product divides a vast range of foods into those backed by 'strong', 'good', 'promising', 'inconclusive', 'some', 'slight', and 'no evidence' categories.
And the majority sit in the inconclusive to no evidence range.
There is no evidence oysters are good for your sex life. There is only 'some' evidence to back the theory that green tea is beneficial to cholesterol levels, the proof that wheatgrass is good for your general health, that chia seeds boost weight loss and heart health and acai berry helps in the fight against cancer and boost weight loss is only slight.
But it is not all bad news.
There is strong evidence that three grams of the sugars found in oats and barley each day helps lower blood cholesterol, and that garlic really can help lower blood pressure, especially for those with raised blood pressure.
Meanwhile there is 'good' proof that almonds consistently lower 'bad' cholesterol in healthy people as well as those with high cholesterol and diabetes.

I used to eat whatever I wanted, blood work was perfect and so was blood pressure.
Now I eat a mostly a 'healthy diet' and take cholesterol/ blood pressure medicine. I get more exercise than most 20 something's and have almost zero stress.
It is what it is....... (called aging and genetics).

The food plants I grow are Heritage ones and they are grown semi-organically. I can't and don't claim full organics because some of the compost etc. that I use could well be from non-organic sources.
I eat lean meat too because I like it, rabbit and possum mostly, some beef and mutton. Two house cows for milk and the excess milk I give to a neighbour who makes craft cheese from it. Use the whey as fertiliser in the garden. A composting toilet and a worm farm.
There is no part of our bodies that is older than 10 years. Our bodies are constantly regenerating. That's called "Ageing", every time a cell regenerates tiny mistakes are made and we see that as ageing.
Tim.

Lol I used to feed my horse on a diet of barley, oats, garlic and olive oil (and some sugarbeet) and he lived til he was 33 (which is really old for a horse!). So is this probably spot on!!

Aging is not ideal but it's what we all have to face at some point, rich and poor, black and white, tall and short...... and yes, aging represents the acumulation of mistakes our cells have made when they regenerate.... I wonder if one day they'll find a way to stop those cells from making mistakes?
Well, Stirks, I guess we should all start eating like your horse! lol

I've been told that I eat like a horse but I suspect that means something different!

We are always dying as soon as we are born into these shells of flesh and bone and blood
In my youth, I believed that BS about hard work and simply doing what was told would see me get ahead in life. Now in my old age, I am more savy and aware of the fake that line was. All I did with my hard work was enrich others bank accounts, I just made enough to pay the rent and bills and eat the cheap and poor diet of garbage box dinners, just add boiling water, and pay no attention to the horrifying ingredients list. It always amazed me that food that was as is, costs more than food with a laundry list of chemistry words of eight or more syllables in each of them.

Those are wise words, we often eat too much salt especially in processed foods.Ω wrote:Limit salt intake to 1,500mg a day.
We do need some salt but not too much.

I avoid food like the Swanson "Hungry Man Dinners" as they usually have 2200-3000 miligrams of sodium in them for a single meal!

This is why people should cook from scratch all the time, cause it doesn't have any chemicals, salt and sugar to keep it 'edible' for longer.
Plus salt makes you retain fluids which in turn makes you hypertensive and on and on and on......

Eating fresh raw medicinal marijuana for health and vitality does not get you high. Marijuana is the most nutritious vegetable in the world with six amino fatty acids. Marijuana is one of the few plants in this world that is a complete protein. Juicing marijuana is very effective for restoring physiological balance. The health benefits are amazing.
