Life on Other Planets?...
An abstract studying the possibility of life on other planets in our Milky Way.

Rational speculation about biological evolution on other worlds is one of the outstanding challenges in astrobiology. With the growing confirmation that multiplanetary systems abound in the universe, the prospect that life occurs redundantly throughout the cosmos is gaining widespread support. Given the enormous number of possible abodes for life likely to be discovered on an ongoing basis, the prospect that life could have evolved into complex, macro-organismic communities in at least some cases merits consideration. Toward that end, we here propose a Biological Complexity Index (BCI), designed to provide a quantitative estimate of the relative probability that complex, macro-organismic life forms could have emerged on other worlds. The BCI ranks planets and moons by basic, first-order characteristics detectable with available technology. By our calculation only 11 (~1.7%) of the extrasolar planets known to date have a BCI above that of Europa; but by extrapolation, the total of such planets could exceed 100 million in our galaxy alone. This is the first quantitative assessment of the plausibility of complex life throughout the universe based on empirical data. It supports the view that the evolution of complex life on other worlds is rare in frequency but large in absolute number.

OMG what a long read!!! lol
Very interesting.......but what if the blocks of life were different on other planets? Scientists only have theories based on what they have learned on Earth, but we can't assume it'd be the same everywhere else.
And if the blocks of life are different, then all other factors would become redundant too, like energy, temperature, etc.

Intelligent civilizations exist all throughout the universe...this is another way of how science is holding you back...there is much proof out there...but nobody would touch it with a ten foot pole because boom...they would lose credibility...
its kind of funny the way scientist go on about the possibility of life out there...........at this pace they will never find it!!

scientist dont want to find life...they want to make money
which means...you have to keep the "research funding" going...by teasing with little bits of garbage that we already know

Can't upset the church either. You know 'we' couldn't handle the idea that more advanced life forms than us are all over the place.

Right....
And we know institutions like NASA know there is intelligent life out there....so..why do you suppose they go on with the charade they do?

They want us locked in the prison planet for their own short lived materialistic 'heaven on earth'.

8.8 billion habitable Earth-size planets exist in Milky Way alone -> http://www.nbcnews.com/science/space/8-8-billion-habitable-earth-size-planets-exist-milky-way-f8C11529186

Re: Life on Other Planets?...
That Is an astounding number and yes...the universe Is teaming with life.
life on other planets May exist in realms and environments That we Just cant imagine...i think life where ever It May Be Will Be unique in its own way...we dont go to the depths of the océan to find humans or same conditions we exist in...and we shouldnt go to space with the dame mentality
how many planets have we ignored...where Say...light beings May exist?

Life May not even need a planet...and i think It exists outside of heavenly bodies,..think of barren space like earth's oceans

The Universe is like our internal nervous system, like the streams and rivers of the Planet.

I agree Ag's. Theoretically all that is needed is energy, liquid and organic compounds (and even that may not be required for a silicon based lifeform). Drake's Equation, even though it has quite a few unknown parameters, would still seem to indicate a huge amount of extra-terresterial life out there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation
The Drake equation is:
N=R*. fp . ne . fl . fi . fc . L
where:
N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which radio-communication might be possible (i.e. which are on our current past light cone);
and
R* = the average rate of star formation in our galaxy
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point
fi = the fraction of planets with life that actually go on to develop intelligent life (civilizations)
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space[8]
Drake states that given the uncertainties, the original meeting concluded that N ≈ L, and there were probably between 1000 and 100,000,000 civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy.

Re: Life on Other Planets?...
Aye Mordman. There are only two atoms the 4 valances; Carbon and Silicon. Earth has carbon based life which means we get our energy from carbohydrates (often too much carbohydrates!) and the waste product is a gas (CO2) and water. Silicon has a waste product SiO4 which is solid. Gives the term "Shit a brick" a whole new meaning!
The chances of life would most probably be carbon based.
