The Oscillating Universe hypothesis says that the matter and energy in the universe is contracted into a singularity (a single lump!) but only for a split second then goes balooey again. The newniverse expands until gravity stops it it expanding and makes it contract back into a singularity again. So the process repeats for eternity.

Personally I don't know -- it's just a hypothesis. Does make sense but.
