Re: Big Earthquakes
News reports of a 6.4 mag quake this morning in Canterbury NZ. Lots of aftershocks too. That's another biggy for the South.
Rock, any more news?

Not much Roggie. Just a gentle swaying. Centred up near Lake Colleridge. Fair distance from here.

Re: Big Earthquakes
There has been a swarm of Aftershocks at the same place according the news here - still ongoing!
The question is; are they aftershocks or foreshocks on a biggie up there?

There was one at Methven about 60Km south of here but I never felt that one.

Re: Big Earthquakes
A lot of action in NZ the last few days, some decent size quakes down the top of the South Island 4's, 5's and 6's.
I also see Canada had a 6.1 in the last few hours. I've not seen many from Canada being reported in the past.

Re: Big Earthquakes
I think one tends to trigger the others... Chile (volcano), West Canada, and NZ are all on the Ring of Fire, no?
Canada does get them but it's been awhile since there's been a big one. The hype for the last fifty years or so has been "the big one is coming!!". Just like in California.
Terrible news about Nepal *sigh*

1500 so far Roggie. There will be more too. Kathmandu is a closely clustered city of buildings.
Had a doosey here on Friday, shook the dust off the lampshades!

Re: Big Earthquakes
Yes Rock, and they expect it could go as high as 5000, with a number of Australian and NZ casualties.

Re: Big Earthquakes
Both Murchison and St Arnaud are right on the Alpine Fault system Rog. The last big one was over that way.
The big storm that damaged Sydney has now arrived here. 300mm rain forecast on the other side of the rocks! We'll get some of it tomorrow by the looks of it.

http://www.news.com.au/world/asia/nepal-earthquake-thousands-dead-as-78-magnitude-earthquake-hits-near-kathmandu/story-fnh81fz8-1227322488107One expert estimates the city of Kathmandu shifted three metres in 30 seconds when the 7.8-magnitude quake struck.
University of Colorado geologist Roger Bilham has told The Washington Post a block of Earth’s crust, about 120 miles long and 60 kilometres wide, shifted roughly three metres south, taking the Nepalese capital and millions of inhabitants with it.
“The earthquake ruptured under the city, very close to the city, so this is as bad as our worst-case scenario, probably,” Mr Billham said.

Re: Big Earthquakes
I was stood in the queue at the bank just now watching pictures of Kathmandu on the news. I haven't seen the news for ages so although had heard of this on the radio, I hadn't seen the devastation. Awful. So many people lost and many more displaced and having to live in tent cities. Where as others are still trying to go about their daily lives amongst the rubble. A lot of scared sites have been devastated too which is sad.

Re: Big Earthquakes
Aye Stirkles. Kathmandu is an old city with very narrow streets and two story buildings each side. When people rushed outside of their houses they were hit by falling debris. Nowhere to go!
I have been there twice and loved it both times. The people are wonderfully friendly.
It is terribly sad!
