Re: Big Earthquakes
They said it was 6.5, but even then that is still big, especially in some countries. I lived in California some years ago and I can tell you, we had to get out of bed and run outside many, many time. It really is a scary thing.Stirky wrote:What size was the Hawaii one Star? That area having earthquakes that big is scary!
We have also been having rain for two weeks now, 7 people dead from flood waters.
Times are really a changing.

5.7 yesterday off Northern Vancouver Island. All these recent ones seem to be ring of fire quakes.

Peru was hit by a 7.5
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/earthquake-peru-brazil-1.3335603
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I think it would be interesting to see how many earthquakes tend to happen around the time of the full moon. Cause the last one was almost a month ago... I wonder about the connection.

Re: Big Earthquakes
It's possible, the moon raises the land as it passes over (land tides). It's only about 15cm though.
The Pacific area is very geologically active too.

Re: Big Earthquakes
It is an interesting one Kaere. I have heard it said the New moons and Full moons correlate to large earthquakes but its been some time since I read anything more about it. Let us know what you find out

Re: Big Earthquakes
Haven't done much reading on it, was pretty much waiting for a big earthquake to report along with the moon phase.
There was a 6.4 in Tres Pico, Mexico
and
A 6.3 in Vanuatu
The moon is 7 days old, end of first quarter.
...I'm just not sure the phases mean much. I mean, it's not like the moon gets bigger or anything, it's just what's brighter at any given time. Anyway... *shrugs*

Re: Big Earthquakes
Vanuatu is volcanic and prone to 'quakes. So is Mexico. Back in the 50's I think, a volcano popped up in a farmers field, not quite the harvest he had in mind I suspect.
It's a sizeable mountain now and the field has ceased to exist!

A 4.8 just off Victoria last night. My facebook peeps all chiming in that they were feeling shaking for a good minute or so but no damage. Not a big earthquake perse but they're all still clucking about it and ruffling their feathers
Moon is 5 days past full (still in the 1st quarter).
