Most cannot Tim, they are trapped, it is so easy to get trapped. If you practice anything for three days you begin to cut a grove in your memory plate, much like a record with groves

I agree. The problem we face right now though is that people have lost their direction. They know that what we have politically/economically isn't working. But they need to be careful what they wish for. All too often the cure is far worse than the disease and we could get a Govt. that is much, much worse than now.

We need to be watchful of creeping Fascism too Len. Note the increase in right-wing parties in Europe and to a lesser extent in the US. When times are tough people look for an escape from the drudgery of their lives. This lets in political parties that have an agenda that is more to the right.

Pretty much. In hard times, a lot of people look for direction, be it the "You must buy (insert product here) to be successful" or the "If we get rid of (insert minority/religion/bloodtype etc here) we will prevail and maintain our lifestyle".

At the same time, not that many people look more deeply into the motivations and ethical directions of such groups.

Earth is in the early stages of a sixth mass extinction, says the journal Science.

EARTH’S sixth great extinction event has already begun. Now science is calling for urgent action to prevent life as we know it going the way of the dinosaurs.

The first five “events” destroyed more than 75 per cent of this planet’s life.

Animals. Plants. Entire ecosystems. The fossil record reveals all were smashed by natural disasters such as asteroids.

It’s happening again: But this time the experts say we are the cause.

Life on Earth is dying at an unprecedented rate.

Part of it seems to lie in how we see things in the cult of personality. Even the major religions have single leaders all yearn to be the next version of.

The next Noah/Moses/Jesus, the next pharoah

The expression "It's good to be the king" has a appeal too many are drawn to.

Opulence and wealth seen as the true signs of success, when a civilization that has no wants, no needs and is reaching gleaming to the stars is foregone all so a few parasites can live over the rest of Humanity like Kings, sucking away any and all chances of greatness as a civilization, that is why the reset button.

Pretty much...one of the features of herd animals is the need for a dominant leader.

@ Mr W - I don't think it's that the gods are pissed so much (although that would be a hell of a keg party  Laughing ), more, to use a virus analogy, that we have used up most of the resources to keep the population (as well as other wildlife) going before the host develops an autoimmune responce.
