Stirky wrote:When we had this problem in the UK it all got out of hand very very quickly. Anarchy and the mob mentality soon set in, and people join in with riots when they have no idea why the riot started in the first place. It was a good excuse for people to go looting, stealing and generally being totally out of order. People that lived and had businesses in the areas affected were scared for their lives. The police need to tackle it in such an aggressive manner, and yes mistakes are made on their part (in the UK a man was killed as he was just peacefully walking home and got pushed to the ground by the police). But, you can say the police are the bad guys here. If they stood back and did nothing then the whole country would be on it's knees. It was scary to see how quickly it spread here and how out of control it did get. There needs to be order or all hell breaks loose.

Re: So this is America?
FERGUSON, Mo. -– There was a stark change Thursday from a day earlier in this St. Louis suburb, with police officers from the city of St. Louis mingling with people protesting the weekend shooting death of teenager Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer. The scene was in sharp contrast to Wednesday, when officers in riot gear led by St. Louis County police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd.
On Thursday, officers allowed a crowd to peacefully assemble without forcing them from the area. Officers mingled with protesters, who gathered to march, wave signs and chant. There were no signs of violence.
"This is what we do," St. Louis Detective Kevin Bentley told The Huffington Post Thursday, contrasting his team's calm with the heightened tension earlier in the week. "The officers out here don't do that ... You can't be thin-skinned."

On August 13, protesters and police in riot gear clashed. Journalists reported members of elite police SWAT teams pointing rifles at protesters at a church-organized gathering, and firing teargas canisters at retreating protesters. There were reports that police fired rubber bullets at protesters who remained on the street. Police also fired teargas canisters and rubber bullets at an Al Jazeera crew that was filming the events from behind a police barricade, according to members of the film crew and other witnesses.

The new head of the Ferguson response is marching WITH the protesters and suddenly military weapons aren't needed.

Okay anon also recanted that leaked cop name and such. Said it was NOT the name their source gave them and they hoped the St.Louis Police would say who he is.
Look t that, a normal police uniform, no assault rifle, or body armor or gas mask. Like a beat cop!

Wow, that is an angry cop. I can't believe the young man was unarmed, that suggest to me the cop felt his life was in danger.

I suppose there are so many possibilities Kae, it is so tragic when these things happen, we really do not know what triggers them.

Police who are in a high stress enough job as is, well, the good ones need access to counseling. BUT to avoid the bad ones, and the do get some aggressive and dangerous types, better psych screening is needed before people are allowed to go to the training academies for police work, catch and reject the baddies so they never have a gun and badge in the first place.

Apparently the kid was a suspect in a robbery but didn't realize it. If that's the case then the whole interaction seen from both sides could explain the reactions.

Yeah but the cop was on the kid and his friend for jaywalking, Jaywalking and shoplifting are not punishable by death. and as the kid was also hands up, still shot multiple time says the cop needs to stop being a cop

I kind of reject this one Kae, it wants to confuse the issue, and I have seen it before. We do not want to think this is the reason the youth was shot 8 times in the head.

I didn't say it was an appropriate reaction, simply that it may have led there.

I know you did not, it is always a tactic by some police to divert their actions from center stage.

Re: So this is America?
Most objectively thinking folks here in the states still agree, no matter what the crime, jay-walking or shoplifting or both Don't deserve the way he was ruthlessly gunned down.
Very important missing contraction there, my bad. Many are of the mind that cop deserves to be removed from Police service as he is obviously dangerous
