Re: Australian Federal Election
Australia has long had a duopoly dominating politics here, with a stable 10% going Green, and often being called a protest vote. The duopoly of majors brings more and more arrogance and entitlement of their position, and a short sighted goal of being in power above what is good for the country. Each election has seen a few more cracks in this ceiling.
This election has seen Labor, who were crushed last election, come back with their lowest primary vote ever, and yet almost win. The Liberal party came into power and really have f**ked so much up and even if they win, they have already lost. Now people are voting against both the major parties. This time more than ever people have started to turn their backs on the duopoly and more have voted minor parties, diverse voices and independants.
The glass ceiling is falling in. Its a great change imo but its going to be a real rough ride. Hopefully it won't be so rough that people will want to run back to the majors and hide their heads in lala land.

Oh I see now, thanks for that I was reading from a woman's perspective instead of minority.

I am hoping on the idea of the 3rd parties getting to garner more votes showing the duopoly here that they are so out of touch with the good fo the nation that the people no longer want them.

Just an update for anyone interested. Still no result here, and we're being told that we're unlikely to have a result until next week. Still no guarantee either party will have a workable majority.

Re: Australian Federal Election
That's a long time to be counting the ballots! Does there need to be a clear majority, our parties have to try to make a minority work. Well... it's either make it work or risk political suicide by calling another election lol

Re: Australian Federal Election
The magic number is 76 seats to form government, less than that they will need to find crossbencers to join them. Liberal has won 73, Labour 66, others have 5. 6 are too close to call and Labour is leading in 5 of those. There will then need to be some recounts of the close seats.
The Senate isn't close to a result either.

Re: Australian Federal Election
They are saying on the news this morning that after over two months campaigning and over 10 million votes having been counted, the two major parties have a difference of only 500 votes

Holy moly! That's... amazing. Aus is truly divided. Is it an equal division across your states or do certain states favour certain parties? (like Scotland voting to stay in the EU and England voting to leave...)

Re: Australian Federal Election
Yeah the states are all very individual with the majors, and each state has particular minors they go for. The Greens support across the country is probably the most equal of all the parties.

Re: Australian Federal Election
Update: 10.5 million votes counted and the diff is now just 71 votes... it gets more and more surprising.

Re: Australian Federal Election
We finally have a government declared. The Liberal/National coalition has claimed victory and Labor has conceded. Still five seats undecided.
