And that Roggie is where people should be mate.

Be aware of the dangers but don't allow it to paralyse one's actions. Texas was caught on the hop so to speak and we have learned a lot from their mistakes. Hopefully it will cause a complete rethink about how we handle highly infectious diseases from now on.

Tim, my take on this whole Ebola thing is that no one is really sure of what they are doing, and because they are afraid they are spreading fear all around them. Realistically I would think the truth is the best method to handle the crisis at the moment. The
people will have to deal with the truth I do not think they will panic, however if the authorities continue to feed the people with bits of conflicting information the real panic will set in.

I don't think that there is any cause for concern, but my sister experienced a creepy coincidence: she was at the Dallas airport on Monday at the exact same time as that nurse! They were in different terminals though.

Q, there is cause for concern, people are not sure what to think or do. At the moment many are believing that the virus can be spread by sneezing or caughfing, WHO has not clarified if that is so. People see these two things as bodily fluids and do not know how to react when they are next to someone sneezing. I think people will speculate and make bad decisions when the information is sketchy.

October 17, 2014 by Belizean

Texas-based Carnival Magic cruise ship anchored at Stake Bank off Belize’s coast.

Reports tonight are that two individuals possibly infected with the Ebola virus are in Belizean waters. Local TV station Channel 7 monitored in the capital City Of Belmopan tonight, reported having credible reports that a couple from a Texas-based cruise ship presently anchored off Belize City, is on a ship tender, unable to return to the cruise ship, while being refused entry to Belize City to catch an air ambulance awaiting at the International Airport to take them to the their country of origin, the U.S.A.

The television station in its broadcast tonight said Belize health authorities contacted tonight have so far refused to deny or confirm the report. The patient exhibiting Ebola symptoms has been confirmed to be a nurse at a Dallas hospital traveling with her husband.

Later tonight in breaking news,  Channel 5 Belize reported that it has:

“Confirmed with representatives of the Ministry of Health that they have indeed received a report that there is at least one passenger on board the cruise ship, Carnival Magic, showing symptoms similar to that of the Ebola virus. According to the report made to MOH, the person exhibiting the symptoms did not come ashore today.

The ship is reportedly carrying 3652 passengers and a total population of 4633 persons.

“The Carnival Magic departed from Galveston Texas on Sunday, October 12 arrived in Mahogany Bay, Honduras on Wednesday October 15 and arrived in Belize this morning, Thursday October 16.

“The ship was scheduled to leave Belize en route to Cozumel this evening at 5pm. However, it is still anchored in Belizean waters near State Bank Caye.”

“We have also have confirmed that the Belize Coast Guard has been deployed to prevent anyone from leaving the ship; including the Belizean pilot on board.”

This is where panic begins, possible world wide. This would also indicate that the virus is not only spread by contact with bodily fluid but also by other means yet to be identified.

Cruise ships are also notorious for spreading viruses, think of how many passengers have gone down with sickness bugs on them in the past.

Although they say the possible infected person is a nurse from a Dallas hospital, possibly been in direct contact with the ebola victim there???

Yea Stirks. 2000 to 3000 people packed into a small space will spread virii. Schools are another place where the Flu for example, spreads like a fire in a pine forest!

Enterovirus D68 too... that thing makes me a bit nervous as a 20 year old has just died from it here in Canada. It generally causes mild cold like symptoms but in some people, they don't know why yet, it becomes much more serious and has been showing polio-like paralysis and other neurological problems that don't dissipate when the illness does. Which is very yikes to me.

Yep Ka. Wasn't there an outbreak of that in Colorado recently?

The toxins from EV D68 can be very dangerous at times.

I have heard about it but have not been following up, where did it come from? Is it curable? How does it spread?

Deadly Ebola Virus - Page 13 Empty Re: Deadly Ebola Virus

Post by Stargate Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:46 pm

I have been thinking about the cruise ship with the two Ebola passangers. How will they handle that? Obviously they were not prepared for that. Don't they have to quarntie all of the passangers? What will they do with the waste material from the sick? Who in their right mind would travel with that ship in the near future? What kind of money will the whole episode cost. There are so many unanswered questions. This virus is poised to topple some governments and bring some economies to their knees. The good thing about the ship is that the Pele on board are isolated, it would be easy to contain, but it could be deadly with so many people on board. This will not be good for the cruise ship industry.

It's a tummy bug Star that can be very nasty. It's spread by contact (shaking hands is one way, tainted food is another).

Remember the biggest and often the most forgotten way of spreading diseases is good old-fashioned MONEY! Especially small change.

Some viruses can survive a long time on hard surfaces. Like the parvo virus that infects dogs, it can live for up to 6 months on a pavement. Some viruses are very hardy!

Interesting prog. on Al Jaz just now about how the experimental treatment was developed from Tobacco plants! Shocked

Apparently the Nicotiana plants are susceptible to many of the virii that affect humans! Didn't know that before!!

Good news!!

Ebola: Nigeria declared Ebola-free in ‘spectacular success’ story using simple trick
OCTOBER 21, 2014 11:24AM
Nigeria declared Ebola-free, holds lessons for others

WATER laced with salt and sugar, and gallons of the nasty-tasting stuff.

Doctors who survived Ebola in Nigeria credited heavy doses of fluids with saving their lives as the World Health Organisation declared the country Ebola-free on Monday, a rare victory in the battle against the disease that is ravaging West Africa.

In the end, Nigeria — the most populous country in Africa, with 160 million people — had just 20 cases, including eight deaths, a lower death rate than the 70 per cent seen elsewhere across the stricken region.

Officials are crediting strong tracking and isolation of people exposed to the virus, and aggressive rehydration of infected patients to counter the effects of vomiting, diarrhoea and other symptoms.

The deadly outbreak is projected to infect 10,000 a week but one country has managed to buck the trend.

Nigeria’s containment of Ebola is a “spectacular success story,” said Rui Gama Vaz, WHO director for Nigeria.

Nigeria has been deemed a ‘spectacular success story’ after managing to contain the disease despite being home to one of the world’s biggest cities.

Survivor Dr Adaora Igonoh said the treatment is not easy. It entails drinking, as she did, at least five litres (1.3 gallons) of the solution every day for five or six days when you have mouth sores and a sore throat and feel depressed.

“You don’t want to drink anything. You’re too weak, and with the sore throat it’s difficult to swallow, but you know when you have just vomited, you need it,” she told The Associated Press. “I had to mentally tell myself, ‘You have got to drink this fluid, whether it tastes nice or not."’

Some 9,000 people have been infected with Ebola, and about 4,500 have died, mostly in hard-hit Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, with the number of cases expected to increase exponentially in the coming weeks.

Dr. Simon Mardel, one of the world’s leading experts on viral haemorrhagic fevers, said the number of deaths could be cut in half if infected people were taught to properly hydrate themselves and do not take anti-inflammatory drugs, which can actually harm Ebola victims.
