Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
This is happening live, just now: It was actually breaking news on the BBC website while I was already there, coincidentally to check for updates on Coronavirus in Scotland - Aberdeen is going back on lockdown due to a new outbreak in the city:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53666665
Sadly so predictable that this would start happening once lockdown began being relaxed. The only surprise for me is that it’s taken this long. Hope not too many people have been put at risk here.

This seems to sadly be the same story in almost every country. Many all too quick to reopen from the first lockdown by the looks of it. Here Victoria is going from bad to worse each day, getting harder to contain.

Have you guys seen the pictures of Aberdeen last weekend? Pubs packed, people queuing, no social distance, no masks... it was only a matter of time.
Schools reopen in full on 17th August.... how long before they close again, I wonder.......

I hadn’t seen any pics, no - but that doesn’t surprise me if people were acting like that given how keen some in the UK have been to disregard lockdown measures, and it makes sense that it would’ve led to an outbreak.
I’ve seen people out without masks or social distancing in Dundee, but that has been outdoors, in the streets etc - I’m not sure what the pubs are like as I’ve still been nowhere near one.
The thought of the same thing happening in Dundee is pretty scary.

On Friday my son (he is 19) went with his pals to a pub crawl as they haven't been out together since March. They went to Glasgow city centre. He said there was social distancing and you had to wear a mask (lifting it up quickly to drink). He said staff in all pubs were very strict.
This was just one bar in Aberdeen last weekend:

Wow, that’s crazy... You’d think it was taken last summer not this summer!
You’re right, total disregard of safety going on there. As someone who’s tried to take the situation as seriously as possible, it annoys me seeing people acting like that when the virus is essentially still out of control.
That sounds good about Glasgow, sounds like the situation is much better there. Hope your son had a good night!

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Interesting video and article I just came across via the BBC website, RE the development, progress and projected availability of a vaccine:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/science-environment-53649145/sir-jeremy-farrar-covid-19-vaccine-ready-in-2020-and-2021
(And I don’t always necessarily regard the BBC as the most reliable source, but this guy seems to have his head screwed on well and to be talking a lot of sense in the interview.)

Good find! I liked it that he was very honest and said that the vaccine depends on all countries getting immunized to work properly... global herd immunity.

Can this be believed?
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the country has developed the first vaccine offering immunity from coronavirus

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
I would usually say never trust anything that Putin / Trump and Johnson say but in this case I think it's true: I read about it in the Argentinian news a few days back, apparently Argentina has bough millions of the Russian vaccines (and yes, they also said they will be mass produced from September).
However, the vaccine is only entering Phase III clinical trials now, which other vaccines (from other countries) have already entered.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
In Soviet Russia, vaccine register you!!
I’m not sure TBH, I guess it’s still too early to be sure about it. Very promising if true though, and that’s the first time I’ve seen anyone finally put a timeframe on when a vaccine will actually be mass-produced and/or rolled out to the general population.
I’m hoping the AstraZeneca one starts mass production soon too, it seems to have passed all the tests.

Forgive my cynicism but until the trials are completed I just can't see past this as simply a race to be first. Good luck to them if its true and a great relief to many, but come on, finish the trials!

Sad to see NZ go back into lockdown today after 102 days virus free. 4 cases have been discovered all in the community and all a mystery as to how they have been caught.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
I really want to see vaccines starting to be approved for mass-production now, I was actually thinking about this last night: Surely this process of approving them is taking too long.
In particular with the AstraZeneca vaccine, I think it’s already been proved now to be both safe and effective, it’s had test after test with glowing results, so they should really be allowed to just go ahead with manufacturing it. I think it’s gotten to the stage now where the authorities are being unnecessarily cautious to approve it.

Quicker is not necessarily always the best way TCL
No risks can be taken when we are looking at something that will likely be administered to millions of people.

I know, but the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has been shown to be safe now though, that’s why I think it’s now taking longer to approve than it should.

I am afraid that things here in the US will get worse before they get better virus wise.

I guess it could be argued that the US has a virus for a President right now, and the Trump virus might need a vaccine before you can start dealing properly with the Covid-19 one.
Definitely I empathise with you on that.

I can't wait for Biden to win the elections and for Kamala to become the first black woman vicepresident!
