Really hope that can happen too! Surely there’s a strong chance

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Just came across this article after Googling the long-term effects of the virus when I came across an article on the Apple News app - some people are still unwell months after they caught the virus:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/long-covid-symptoms-hospitalised-long-haulers-three-months-study-a9679876.html%3famp
I’d read about this before, but as time has gone on more data on it has been gathered and collated.
It sounds pretty scary, and I’m hoping I don’t have whatever vulnerability it is that causes these long symptoms. :-/

Interesting article. It was only last night on my way out, on the car radio, I heard an interview of medical professionals saying just that. They also said, which wasn't mentioned in the article, that they were seeing people with long term impacts of people's hearts and lungs. This is really quite a worrying discovery, and makes you realise we still only in the early stages of learning about this virus.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
I didn't want to say anything before because I didn't want to alarm anybody, but this is what I have been seeing with my own eyes (post covid effects): long term cough (especially with smokers), sugar levels all over the place even with non- diabetics, depression (many of my colleagues are suffering with depression and anxiety right now and some have had covid like me), arrhythmias, tiredness, weight loss and many cases of pneumonia after they have recovered.
We are seeing covid affecting the brain and body in some people, but it's difficult to say why those people are more vulnerable to the virus... I don't think scientists know yet, all assumptions right now. Luckily I am ok, but I do get more tired than before.
This is why I can't stand those saying it's a fake disease and protesting against wearing masks.

That’s what I was wanting to say Aggie, that I hope you’ve not had any long term health effects from it... So glad to hear that you’re essentially all good! And I hope you’ll eventually get 100% of your previous energy back
(No need to avoid mentioning these things to us in case it causes alarm, honestly... I know that I’d rather know the full extent of the truth at all times, even if it is grim! )
It’s pretty worrying that people are being adversely affected long-term both physically and mentally by it.
This virus really is something out of a horror movie.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Well, reality is worse than fiction, me thinks.
I think I am doing so well despite all the suffering and death I witnessed during the first wave because I like zombies/scary/disaster movies:
Pandemic practice: Horror fans and morbidly curious individuals are more psychologically resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886920305882?fbclid=IwAR1f7D06MhbJmf38wvPCRabCpZs_7QZNOB4BjiTZosBB3OVkZg-lAfBVgJA

5. Conclusions
While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly everyone in one way or another, certain people seem to be handling the psychological effects better than others. We tested the idea that experience with particular kinds of fiction, namely, horror and pandemic fiction, would be associated with better preparedness for and psychological resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings support the idea that fiction can be a useful simulation of both specific scenarios – in the case of pandemic films – and generally fearful scenarios – in the case of horror films. Experience with these simulations may benefit the user through preparation and practice of both specific skills relevant to particular situations and more general skills associated with emotion regulation. We also found that morbid curiosity, a personality trait that has been previously associated with interest in horror (Scrivner, in press), was associated with greater positive resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Importantly, these effects were significant even when controlling for age, sex, income, and general factors of personality. In sum, the current study provides evidence that individual differences in both media preferences and personality are associated with resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wow, that is a fascinating idea, and it has a logical basis too!!
I have an interest in crime documentaries and other disasters(Like wars etc) which I’ve always thought of as a morbid fascination, as well as an interest in disaster movies including the ones about disease - hope that counts! LOL

I'm sure they do: apparently our brain absorbs the info in those programs/documentaries and stores it so that it knows what to do if you ever have to face that type of situation in real life.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Another article on the long-term effects of Coronavirus, this time on the BBC website, and seems to be backed up by good data, as well as referencing the COVID Symptom Tracker app I’ve been using since May:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54296223
There’s confirmation as well of what Aggie was saying about there being a wide range of long-term symptoms and complications, with both physical and mental health being compromised.
It feels to me that the more we learn about this virus, the more alarming it gets. :-/

I read this today! And yes, I have seen it and doctors are hearing it from many people.
Lion, it is alarming but then you have people like me who had Covid and have no long term effects. And I'm not the only one.

That’s one thing that massively pleases me - that you are OK!
(I wouldn’t have assumed it, since only you know how you feel - I was hopeful that you were feeling fine, as you’d never mentioned on here continuing to not feel well - but now you’ve confirmed it, seeing it makes me so glad and so happy! )
Yes, it’s easy to get hung up on the alarming aspects of it, when there are always the more positive factors too

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Thank you, don't forget only a very small percentage of the population suffers from post covid long term effects. Most, including my 70+ year old mother, are fine.
The virus is dangerous: its infectious rate is high, its mortality rate is 3/4% (seasonal flu is 0.1%) so despite what morons say we have to be careful. Here is a graph published this morning:

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
That’s a very helpful chart, I’ve wondered for a while what the direct comparison is between this virus and seasonal flu in terms of mortality.
Holy crap!!
That is scary, and totally debunks early reports on how deadly we thought the virus is(Back in March I believed it was less deadly than seasonal flu! Just shows how much misinformation gets cut and pasted as fact, I guess).
Plus it’s compared to pneumonia here, yet it actually causes pneumonia in some victims, which suggests it could be even worse than implied here.
Ugh! :-/

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Covid caused 12.4% of deaths, pneumonia 3.5% and flu 0.1%... this means covid caused three times more death than (non covid) pneumonia and the flu together.
There is a lot of false information online, I see things that horrify me on facebook every day! From people I know! We live in a world of free immediate misinformation.... people believe everything they read and never fact check.... so sad.

When Will The Coronavirus Pandemic End?

It's impossible to say with any degree of certainty just how long the COVID-19 pandemic that took the world by storm in early 2020 will last.
There are two ways to describe an 'end' to a plague. One is elimination, which is a reduction of new cases to a suitably low number (preferably zero). The other is eradication - a clear, permanent, and complete wiping out of an infectious agent.

Re: CORONAVIRUS-Updates, discussion, etc
Great posts Aggie, and that looks like an interesting article!
Obviously we’ve kinda elongated the pandemic by slowing its spread with our lockdown/social distancing measures, but I’m hoping that we have a vaccine available that’ll help us end the pandemic much faster than if it was untreated.
I’m guessing, off the top of my head based on what we do know, that the pandemic will go on till some point in 2022.
