Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
No worries Aggie, and I actually don’t blame you - I actually wondered after posting last night if my continuing anxiety about the virus might have thrown you a bit - that is, unfortunately, how much I tend to worry about these things! If something poses a potential risk - even if that risk is now reduced - my default mindset is to assume the worst case scenario(IE that I might be one of the ones of the ones with severe symptoms), and try to protect myself according to that fear. “Better safe than sorry” etc etc… I sometimes wish I didn’t think like that, I know I’ve probably compromised my own quality of life by continuing to do this, living with anxiety isn’t fun! LOL
What you’re saying about mixing the vaccines for the booster shot enhancing immunity makes good sense too, TBH - if someone has had different vaccines it’s exposing them harmlessly to the virus from different angles, so to speak, and should only help to train the immune system even better. I think it might actually be a very good idea.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Two important studies were released this week, both done in the UK. The first one shows that the chances of requiring hospitalization more than doubled with the Delta variant compared to other variants. The median age of those hospitalized was 31.
The study also showed 74% of people who required hospitalization were unvaccinated.
24.2% had 1 dose.
1.8% had 2 doses. This clearly shows how important the vaccines are.
However, a second study also showed the protection provided by the vaccines decreased with time: Pfizer went from 88% to 74% at six months, and AZ from 77% to 67% at six months. This shows we will need a booster, or protection may go under 50% when Winter comes.

2nd study: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.n2113

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
I definitely hope we'll get a booster (going on the info I posted the other day). I now know several people who have covid, one of them (a colleague of mine) had Covid in March 2020 and has had two dosis of Pfizer. She is ok, very mild symptoms, but this is the Delta variant which is not what she had 18 months ago.
My daughter has 5 friends in isolation with Covid.
The Delta variant is spreading like wildfire in Scotland right now, we had more than 7000 confirmed cases yesterday!

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
I’ve been promised a booster before the end of this year, I really hope I can get it, for exactly the reasons you’ve said.
I’m also hoping that the existing vaccines are being modified to deal with this damn Delta variant.
I’m hoping that antiviral treatments are being developed to attack the virus on a more fundamental level, because as good as the vaccines are, they’re not doing enough at the moment.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
7000 cases!? Is that more than at any other time? It does sound very bad indeed.
I read somewhere recently (may have been a BBC article) that Pfizer effectiveness drops off after 6 months and AZ after 8 months, then the booster is going to be required. Is that correct?

Read the post I wrote above 3 days ago, there is also a link for the study. Both Pfizer and AZ start declining after a few months.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Yes, but that's why I asked. Those studies seemed to show slightly different results.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Ah, sorry, I didn't understand what you were trying to say.
A couple of months ago (probably June but could have been last month) I remember Astrazeneca saying their own vaccine's efficacy lasted longer than others. But that was a very biased statement, in my own opinion, and proper studies (like the one I posted) actually show the Pfizer to be slightly (only slightly) better than the AZ.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Meanwhile in crazy-land(USA), millions still deliberately resist vaccine from fear or unscientific information they got from other conspiracy nutters.
Some have even believed ivermectin a livestock de-wormier, will save them and it has costs as it is a animal level de-wormier not an anti-viral.
some have died from horse sized doses taken, and others may be sterile now(although idiots unable to re-produce may be a good thing).
Glad I had the Moderna shots

There is a lot of misinformation in the UK too, but not as bad as the US. People are ignorant, they do not understand how vaccine works, they do not understand numbers... and instead of trusting scientists/healthcare professionals who do know, they trust any idiot online that has a youtube channel.

Sad to see folks go so ignorant, and so vehemently in support of these wacky theories.

Which vaccine did you have as a booster?

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Yeah, I'm lucky because I'm a healthcare worker, otherwise it wouldn't have been so quick.
I got the Pfizer again.... I actually feel weird right now, I can feel it's two vaccines my immune system is fighting.

They've just started offering boosters here to 75+ yr olds. I'm glad you got it! Feeling weird though, hope that passes (((hugs)))

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Great to hear that you’ve got the booster!! Hope the side effects soon clear up and you feel fine again
I actually phoned my GP practice and the vaccine helpline last week to ask about when I might expect to get a booster, and the impression I’m getting is that I might get offered it anytime from late November onwards.

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Thank you both! I actually had a terrible night and I felt so sick at work in the morning, like my head was under water... luckily from 3pm the side effects started to wear off and I'm ok now.
Two vaccines at once is superheroes stuff! LOL

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Wow, sorry to hear you had such an unpleasant 24 hours(Well done coming into work if you felt that way!) but glad that you feel better now!
That really sounds like you’ve gone through it this time, the booster sounds tough… For some reason I thought it might be milder than the original jabs. So glad you’ve gotten over these side effects fairly quickly!
Hope you get a good sleep tonight and continue feeling better tomorrow

Re: Covid-19 Vaccine updates
Thank you! I feel 100% back to normal now.
It's not that the booster gives a stronger reaction, it's the fact that I also had the flu jab and that meant my body was fighting two viruses at the same time. But it only lasted a day.

Much better than having to fight either of those viruses for real
