Two mystery planes over London.
MYSTERY PLANE WITH NO CALLSIGN CIRCLES SOUTH LONDON FOR HOURS.
A mysterious plane has been spotted on a flight tracking app circling South London, over and over again, for no obvious reason.
The plane - a Cessna F406 Caravan II, with the registration G-BVJT - took off from near to Farnborough on Tuesday morning and then circled south London several times at an altitude of about 10,000 feet.
The course of the plane was publicly viewable on flight tracking apps and websites.
At first the plane just looks like a weird but mundane curiosity - though maybe something to justify the £1.99 price of the number one paid app in the App Store.
It circled London from about 10am to 12.30pm, whereupon it appeared to vanish (though that may have been the app's fault).
But it looks like users of plane tracking forums might have solved the mystery -- and it might not necessarily make for entirely comfortable reading.
The plane with this registration appears to have been linked in the past with spy planes operated by the Metropolitan Police. The planes, which the Telegraph reported in 2011 cost up to £3 million each per year, have been in use since at least 1997.
So what's the point of these planes? Apparently -- at least this is the widespread theory, and we can't definitely confirm it - the plane is used for surveillance, or more specifically to intercept mobile phone conversations and intercept calls.
The Telegraph report suggests they are roughly similar to planes used by MI5 for anti-terrorism operations and have been used to crack various plots over the years. That said, it's possible they are now used for other operations or have other "intel" packages on board. We really have no idea.
UPDATES:
1)The Metropolitan police denied all links to the plane.
2) A second plane spotted in Romford.
.........strange???

Re: Two mystery planes over London.
Not so much strange...more business as usual. But once you combine the similarities between US and UK surveillance, and the influence it's having on the UK police, it becomes more obvious. It's probably just a question of when, rather than if, you get this sort of situation happening (if it isn't already).
http://www.juancole.com/2014/07/terrorists-committed-entrapment.html
...Many prosecutions have properly targeted individuals engaged in planning or financing terror attacks, the groups found. But many others have targeted people who do not appear to have been involved in terrorist plotting or financing at the time the government began to investigate them. And many of the cases involve due process violations and abusive conditions of confinement that have resulted in excessively long prison sentences.
The report is based on more than 215 interviews with people charged with or convicted of terrorism-related crimes, members of their families and their communities, criminal defense attorneys, judges, current and former federal prosecutors, government officials, academics, and other experts.
In some cases the FBI may have created terrorists out of law-abiding individuals by suggesting the idea of taking terrorist action or encouraging the target to act. Multiple studies have found that nearly 50 percent of the federal counterterrorism convictions since September 11, 2001, resulted from informant-based cases. Almost 30 percent were sting operations in which the informant played an active role in the underlying plot...

So we are basically all terrorists........sometimes it feels like we are back in the middle ages (or like we never left) and terrorism has become the new witch hunt.

We are still in medieval times, but better treated serfs for the time being than those of the past. Plus better toys than centuries ago

Re: Two mystery planes over London.
This is the latest about the planes, just posted half hour ago:
Yesterday the Metropolitan Police denied any involvement. Today:
Of course we have the opposition parties going on at it too:
I wonder if the same is going on all over the world........anybody fancy downloading that app to check?
I don't know what they are doing: spying on somebody or all of us, intercepting criminal/terrorist activity, etc..........but it does smell a lot like 1984.......
The aircraft, which was detected on flight tracking app flightradar24, has no recognisable call sign, meaning it cannot be identified on the app.
Yesterday the Metropolitan Police denied any involvement. Today:
Scotland Yard has refused to clarify what the plane, described as a twin-engine Cessna F406, is used for. The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime has also declined to comment.
Of course we have the opposition parties going on at it too:
Lib Dem London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon said: "Of course the Met needs to defend some secrecy over its surveillance work, however you can't put planes up over London without people noticing. It would be best if the Met simply admitted that vital surveillance work takes place and at the same time was open about the costs of such operations."
