Attacks on IS in Syria
Well say hello to another new war, as the US and Arab states have attacked the IS. The UK is currently deciding to get involved. This is the first time action has been taken in Syria although a civil war has raged there for 3 years. The first move into stopping IS, or a very bad move??? Time will tell.

So much for representative governments.
Who exactly are they representing?

Another excuse for another war it seems, although there has not been any of the usual media hype on this (YET!)

Re: Attacks on IS in Syria
Terror threat from al-Qaeda veterans in Khorasan eclipses that of the Islamic State, US intelligence officials say
SEPTEMBER 23, 2014 9:08PM
The Khorasan group — which the US has hit in its air strikes against Syria — was actively plotting against a US homeland target and Western targets, according to reports.
The threat was “imminent”, a source told CNN.
US Central Command said that eight strikes were conducted against Khorasan targets including training camps, an explosives factory and command facilities.
As the world reacts with horror to the Islamic State, the United States raised an alert over an “unholy mix” of militants specifically targeting the West.
As al-Qaeda fragments after the death of its leader Osama bin Laden, one of its many offshoots in the Middle East has named itself Khorasan. It asserts the sole reason for its existence is to attack the United States and Europe.
The White House believes them. The US military launched air strikes in Syria on Tuesday, targeting the Khorasan group.
The Obama administration has said that the Islamic State, the target of more than 160 air strikes in recent weeks, does not pose an imminent threat to the US homeland.
The Khorasan group, however, is considered a clear and present danger.

People are getting fed up of it VM, and they are waking up to it too. I don't know if it will ever end though, I always feel so bad for those innocent people caught up in war zones. Human beings can be so terrible

Re: Attacks on IS in Syria
The Raqattaq started something that can't be finished. ISIS had to happen because the US backed Shia Govt. in Iraq shunned the Sunnis. The Sunni were cut out of the oil revenue and were sidelined. When the Yanks took over Baghdad they sacked Sadd's army (mostly Sunni) and rendered the soldiers un-employed. So you have a group of very poor people, armed to the teeth. The rest is the natural progression of things.
The problem behind it all is our addiction to cheap oil.

Give it time, the fact the coalition hit Aleppo (which isn't under ISIL control), against the wish's of the (argueably) elected leader, while at the same time wanting to arm "moderate" rebels (who are probably gathered around Aleppo) doesn't bode well.

Aye Mordie. Who the hell do we support? Help the Moderates and some of the 'Help' will filter through to the villians, perhaps most of it will. Help Assad and we will be in Iran's pocket.
What to do, what to do!

Tough call, however at this point the best option might actually be to help Assad stabilise the region. Once everything's settled down, there is always the option of elections in a few more years. Otherwise it's more likely to be a repeat of Libya.
IMV, Iran isn't really a huge issue. It doesn't really have any record of using chemical or biological weapons (seem to recall something about the religious leaders calling them immoral so the likelihood of them developing nukes is fairly remote at this point as well) nor any real record of expansive land grabbing, and they'll still be a few years getting back on their feet if they are brought back into the fold.
The only real surefire thing we can say is that the current plan is not working. Never has, never will.

Re: Attacks on IS in Syria
Good point Mordie but since when have our Dear Leaders ever been sensible?
This whole story starts with the way that Israel came into being. Followed by the way the Iran Govt. was overthrown back in 1953. That made the people there realise that the US in particular could not be trusted. The continual support of Israel regardless of it's brutal suppression of the Palestinians has fed the fire.
Iran is not the bloody enemy and never was. They have never attacked their neighbours in 1000yrs and have no intention of doing so now. They are Shia and so is Assad. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt etc. are all Sunni dominated, so it's the age old factional Islamic war. The Xtians have nothing to crow about either when you read the wars that have been fought on idealogy throughout it's history.
The current problems were simmering along just under the surface but the Yank attack on Iraq set it all off.

Technically Assad is Alawite, but they do observe shia holidays. The fact that his minority of the Alawites in ruling positions is what upset the Sunni majority of Syria. The whole region is borders made by Britain and France and the European powers.
Yep, seems we created another boogyman, seems my Nation is addicted to both Oil and War.

Re: Attacks on IS in Syria
Yep Len. The Alawites are sort of Shia as are the Kurds. Syria is predominately Sunni and there are tensions there.
Madd Sadd was Sunni and his Govt was too. When I went there the first time the country was peaceful and everyone had a job. Sadd had Govt run factories and industry. The electricity and water was on all the time. Some of the best Universities there were free to anyone, even visitors and they had the best Health care around.
Then the Yanx arrived and it all fell apart because of the Yank paranoia with Socialism, they demolished all those institutions and set up Private Enterprise and we know ourselves how well PE cures unemployment! They disbanded Sadd's army and set up one that was Shia. So the root cause was put in place by the crazy attitude of Paul Bremmer.
al Malaki was set up by the US and he set about suppressing the Sunni even more and the result is what we have today.
