Re: Canada Federal Election
I voted because I have the right to vote. Many women struggled and fought hard to earn me that right, and it's important to me.
Do I think changes are coming? I don't know *shrugs* things change all the time, nothing stays the same.
Let's ask another Canadian. Solace, what do you think?

I re-newed my citizenship recently Ka. That's why I can. Always kept my Canadian Citizenship up-to-date.

Re: Canada Federal Election
I did not understand that Tim. If you are a Canadian citizen, why do you have to keep your Canadian citizenship up to date? Does that not mean you have a Canadian passport?

Re: Canada Federal Election
I have to go to Canada at least once every ten years Star. In 2008 I visited my younger daughter in Vancouver so that allows me to keep my citizenship up to date. Yep I have a Canadian Passport (along with a UK one and A Russian Passport too.) I also have a Canadian Drivers licence and a Russian one too. I often have some fun with the Road Cops here, on the rare times I get pulled over I show them my Russian DL and say, "No speeky Eeenglish!" Causes some consternation amongst them!
Couldn't do that in the US I'd get shot!

Re: Canada Federal Election
It's every five years you have to come back in order to vote, Rockhopper, and I'm pretty sure you have to have intentions to return to the country. It's been that way since 1993...

It's been a really hot topic in Canada for this election, all over the news, which is why... I'm a little confused.
I didn't know you could have a DL if you're not a resident of one of our Provinces. You must do a lot of traveling to keep your details up to date as you have to renew those in person, I'd like to have your airmiles

You can have 'em Ka, I don't need them now.
Yep, the rules have changed recently, I managed to scrape through this time but won't be able to again unless I qualify for the 5 year rule. My DL is issued by Ontario.

I believe a lot of people are waking up and want to change things for the better. I desperately want to see more protection over the environment. I believe in putting our money into health care, education, and environmental causes. This isn't an easy objective for any of the political parties, but it is the change that i want to see and the direction i am heading when i vote.

Re: Canada Federal Election
I just read that this will be the first year there won't be a results blackout... I guess social media made it too difficult to keep the results under wraps until the last polling station closed on the west coast.

Was there a purpose in blocking the results?Kaere wrote:I just read that this will be the first year there won't be a results blackout... I guess social media made it too difficult to keep the results under wraps until the last polling station closed on the west coast.

Re: Canada Federal Election
Is that because the polling booths are still open on one coast when the other coast closed several hours earlier? Thats what happens here, but they don't block the results.
Btw, the video above doesn't appear to work?

Re: Canada Federal Election
That's exactly it, Rogue. It was to prevent the west from voting based on numbers coming out of the east. If one party was winning in the east, it was thought it might influence voting elsewhere.
Can I just say that I love that there is no campaigning allowed on election day? *phew* it's a relief.
Will look for another version of the video

Re: Canada Federal Election
Again we live in interesting times!
Found out why I can still vote Ka. I have investments in Canada and I pay tax on them. But I must return and stay for at least 30 days in Canada or it's territories once every 5 years. So I can vote as long as I fit that bill.
Good article on Stevie here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/opinion/sunday/the-closing-of-the-canadian-mind.html

The Liberals have won a majority, the Conservatives are now the Official Opposition. Eastern Canada being mostly Red and Western Canada mostly Blue.
